Aperture grill & Shadow mask

What is the differance? Is one better then the other for gaming?

I'm somewhat familier with aperture grill, but I just recently heard of shadow mask. I'm currently using a 7+ yr old Optiquest and was thinking of picking up a bigger one while the egg has the 99cent shipping for anything going on.

Aperture Grille uses squared pixels to make the picture and provides deeper colors and higher contrast. A con is that you will notice 2 very thin wires going across the screen, mostly noticeable during text applications.

Shadow Mask uses circular pixels to make the picture and provides a more precise image. A con is that you will notice that the picture isn't as clean as if you are looking through a window. It's more like looking through a screen door and then a window.

You're using a Shadow Mask right now. Most CRTs use this technology. Aperture Grille is generally considered better.

The lines tend to drive some people crazy, but most can't even notice them. I suggest you go to a local PC store (even staples or something would work) and test one of each in some apps to see how you like them. I personally can't see the lines unless I am on a pure white screen and really trying.

I can see the lines very easily on the white screen without trying. In fact, it was bothering me while I typed my previous post. I had to move my window.

I still consider the Aperture Grille better though. If your buying for text applications, you should just go for LCD anyway.
