Aperture 3 has been released!

Been playing with it for an hour or so.. I'm really loving this update. Really slick, and LOTS of useful features.

This basically combines everything I loved about Lightroom into Aperture. 😀

any chance the metadata will come across. i've been using lightroom extensively, and while I don't mind losing the adjustments, things like ratings and keywords are going to be a pain to redo.

That I'm not sure about. I'm going to toy with that. I'm running into the same problem. I have my old backed up Aperture library that I'm using at the moment, but all my newer photos (from the last 5 months) are processed with Lightroom, so we'll see...

Although it doesn't affect me directly, I think it's lame... but expected... that Apple is limiting Aperture 3 to Core 2 Duo or later Macs.

Actually though, their web page doesn't have the "or later" part. There is no listed support for Core i7s for example. I betcha they'll be fixing that soon.

NOPE. Wrong. Core 2 Duo is recommended, not required.

Are there really people with PPC Macs that want to use Aperture? I think that everyone (even the most stingiest of friends that I have) has upgraded to an Intel based Mac.

I just think the target market for this app is going to be people who are on Intel based machines.

Actually, I was saying that it required a 64-bit Intel Mac. However, that's actually wrong. The system requirements page only recommends a Core 2 Duo.

So, if you had to choose one, which would you pick, Lightroom or the new Aperture?

At this point.. I'm leaning toward Aperture. I owned Aperture 2 and loved it, but then started using the new Lightroom 3 Beta and really loved the brushes, and other non-destructive editing features.

A few things that I haven't found as easy solutions for in Aperture 3:

1) Gradient Tool (although I'm sure I could just use a very feathered brush for the same type of effect)
2) Camera Calibration
3) Clarity tweaks

There might be more.. but those could be a deal breaker, since I use them a lot in Lightroom.

Things that Aperture has that Lightroom doesn't (some are subjective):

1) Video
2) Slideshows
3) Better UI
4) Full screen editing
5) Better backup system
6) Better performance

You think the performance is better in Aperture 3 as compared to Lightroom 3 Beta? I've not used the Beta of Lightroom, but Lightroom 2 is much faster on my MBP than Aperture 3. The UI as always been better in Aperture IMHO .. Lightroom's panels are just too big etc and take up so much room unless you hide them. Aperture is more compact and puts the real-estate where it's needed ... the editing window.

Yea, I definitely do think Aperture is quicker than Lightroom. I don't know if it's just my perception, but Lightroom is a dog when I'm jumping between the Library and the Develop modules. Not only that, but if I try to do anything else on my system while I'm in Lightroom my computer comes to a grinding halt.. Where as I'm importing images into Aperture now and doing some editing in Photoshop/surfing in Safari, and it's perfectly useable.
