APC Powerchute software can't find my UPS

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this ...

I use the APC "Back UPS XL" model BX900QR UPS on my home server(running Win7 x32). I installed the APC Powerchute software but the program can't finish because it can't find the UPS. The UPS is connected to the computer with the APC provided R45 to USB cable.

I'm not sure what to look for in device manager, but there is an "unknown device" listed under in the Universal Serial Bus controllers tab. I tried to update drivers for this device but Window says the drivers are current/correct. Then I uninstalled the unknown device, unplugged the APC cable, re-plugged it, scanned for changes, and the unknown device reappeared. I'm still not sure this unknown device is related to the APC UPS though.

I think/remember on a different computer, years ago, that the APC Back-up device showed as a separate device in Device Manager under "Batteries" or something like that. But I don't have any category under Devices related to battery. This is a desktop computer.

Any suggestions on what I should try next?

Check in Devices and Printers. My APC Back-UPS ES 600 shows up as an active device there.

Thanks for the tip.
I also found out that normally, the APC device would show up under Device Manager > Batteries >APC Battery Backup. But I don't have the category "Batteries" in my Device manager.
I'm going to check my Power Management options/setup too to lake sure I didn't turn something off (I keep the computer from sleeping now).

Now the "APC Battery" device is shown in Device Manager under Human Interface Devices, but it is not working (has an exclamation symbol on the icon). It says "This device cannot start (Code 10)". I ran the "update device drivers" but it says the drivers are correct and current, so I'm still stuck trying to get this working.

Make sure you have a good USB link between them. You might try reinstalling the Powerchute software that comes with the UPS. Then open and run the software checking all your options.

And, yes, this is not the right forum. It would be best in Windows Software - definitely not OS. :) I equested a move.

Windows 7 and 8.1 find my APC UPS's automatically, and puts an icon in the tray. Then I just go into power options and tell it what I want it to do. Just like a laptop, is has options for "on battery" and "plugged in". Haven't needed APC's software in years, on any system.
