I got this link from a newsletter that APC sends me. Regular price on this site is $179.99 and it's currently on sale for $99.99 (limit 5 per person, according to newsletter). I did a search on Price Watch "BP500UC" and the lowest I could find there was $122.00 and $10.98 for shipping. PriceGrabber came up with $117.50 and $15.18 for shipping (AZ).

LINK They also have a link to other APC products they sell and it looks like they have been discounted too, but I haven't checked any of the pricing sites on those.

Here is the unit on APC's website, with more views and specs.

Hope this turns out to be good deal.

I hope the USB connection is worth it. Cuz I got a older model with the same 500VA battery for $50.

Well, doesn't look as good of a deal considering the 1100VA Pro model sold at $149 a few weeks ago. Price matched with CompUSA's $50 rebate, you could've had the 1100VA for $100 plus shipping/tax.

But was the 1100VA a USB model? This is the first time I recall seeing a decent deal on a USB UPC.

is being USB really that important?

It's a serial port on the 1100VA. Care to explain any major differences between that and a USB model? Remember, the most important features are the AVR (automatic voltage regulation) and the huge 1100VA rating. I could care less about hooking it up via windows just to see a few bar graphs.

Connection allows testing and status info and the capability of shutting down your operating system gracefully in the event of a power loss. This is mindless stuff, so the connection speed and medium isn't an issue. I would rather have a UPS that is serial for the simple fact that when/if I ever want to get rid of it, it will communicate with just about any operating system. NT for example doesn't see USB natively.

No I guess, not. Us early adopters of cutting edge technology like USB should really keep our mouths shut. :p The sooner we stop buying old technology, the sooner we'll see it go away.

I was just passing the info on, looked like a good deal to me. I currently use a Smart-UPS 1000 (SU1000NET), and don't have the serial connection hooked up because it kept going into battery mode for no reason. If I unplug the serial cable it comes right out of battery mode. I think it has something to do with XP's UPS software. I also have 30 or so more of these units in storage, so I won't be buying another UPS for a while.:p Also price matching isn't for everyone, some places won't do price matching with on-line retailers only ones that have stores locally. Some people don't have a AMEX blue either. Also I just checked that deal and MicroCenter doesn't even carry that 1100va unit anymore, the page comes up blank. CompUSA has the BP1100 for $299.99 now with no rebates, you could always wait for another deal on that again and you could also wait for ram prices to drop too.:D CompUSA also has the same unit BP500 for $149.99, but it's clear. I admit the deal on the 1100VA was better, but it's gone. :(

Dont forget about APC's trade ups program which allows you to trade in any old UPS regardless of the company for a new APC UPS at a lower price. BF500u's go for 74 dollars and come direct from APC. Click here for more info on it. Got this link from a rep on the phone when trying to upgrade my 500VA Units. So hit those local garage sales and pick up a dead unit and trade it up.

Samsclub.com has the BF500U for 69.95 plus 6.50 shipping. Granted it's less available to the general masses.
