I have the APC Back-UPS ES Series 500 (Model BE500). It's the one that has a serial port connection to the computer. I plugged in the serial cable to both the back of the computer and the port on the UPS. I installed the PowerChute Plus program that APC has on their website, but during installation, the install program could not detect the UPS. I figured that the serial port had to be 'refreshed', so I cancelled the installation and rebooted the computer. After rebooting, I tried the installation again and the install program could not find the UPS.

Anyone else have this problem or have any solutions?

thanks,
don

I have the same problem too. I installed the powerchute plus = no good
then I installed the powerchute business edition = no good
then I check serial com port and its working but still no detection
then I tried to change the IRQ of my com port and still its no good.
I saw the setting for the com port "communication settings" , the part about "bits", parity and other setting. But I didnt mess with that coz I am
afraid of some serious damage to my mobo.

Here are the instructions I posted in this thread:

Set the serial port settings to :
Bits per second = 2400
Data bits = 8
Parity = none
Stop bits =1
Flow control = Xon/Xoff

In the advanced tab uncheck 'Use Fifo Buffers'

If you have the software auto-detect the unit it will not work.
When you manually detect, don't tell it it is the BackUPS Pro, just a BackUPS.

Try them it will probably work for you. You can not hurt your motherboard by changing the serial port settings in Windows.
