So i'm moving to NY early next year for my first job. the job is in the financial district, so i would prefer something close to that or with easy access through subway.
i'm looking to pay a max of 2500 a month for a studio or 1br.

what are some good areas to look in? is looking online the best way to go? anyone have any recs on good apartments?

thanks a lot!

nice first job if you have 2500 for an apartment per month
don't discount cost of living factors. 2500 just for rent, then you have utilities, food, transportation expenses which can add up pretty quick (500-1000 a month depending on how you live)

but if 2500 is your real apartment rent budget you can find a 1BR in almost all areas of manhattan, especially in the financial district.

honestly though, you should try to rent for less money, save big time, and buy in the depressed housing market sure to ensue next year

edit: and 'depressed' housing market in manhattan means the prices don't go up, not that they go down

2500 is the top end of what i would pay, but that would have to be for a very nice place. i've been searching online and found a few places a little further away for ~1500.

the job i have is in the IT sector.

as for locations, i'd like it to be not longer than a 45 min ride to work in the morning. I don't go out clubbing too much but there should be some good bars in the area. the place needs to have a parking garage as i will be taking my car for long trips

thanks!

expect to pay extra for monthly parking, on top of the advertised rental price if they have garage space available. At least, that's how it works in Chicago. Downtown are of Chicago was around $200/month just to park your car a few years back. (last I checked)

There are two financial districts, BTW. Which one? Makes a difference if you're limiting yourself to a 45 minute commute.

Just to be clear, you want to pay an extra ~$200/month plus the cost of owning your car for an occasional long trip (2-3 per year? how much vaca do you get?). Pretty expensive trips, IMO. MUCH cheaper to rent / do zipcar.

The housing around the financial district (WTC area) is pretty expensive. I would try the buildings at 2 Gold Street -- It's like a huge building of hot fun professionals who make way too much money working and playing hard. The rooftop garden/common area is a really nice hangout and place to meet other neighbors. The downside is at night and weekends the neighborhood itself is kind of dead, but there are tons of bars a short walk or a subway stop away. I think they just built a new station pretty close to the building. The building is pretty new and nice, with awesome amenities. My cousin lived there before in a one BR converted into a 2, still pretty nice sized. You can either try CL or go through the website, (I think they have one).

As for groceries, etc., there is a Gristedes nearby, otherwise you can take the Path or subway to Trader Joe's on the weekend to stock up on all you need :)

The area is pretty safe, and the building is a brisk 15 minute walk to the financial district--no traffic!

Did you look into Jersey, some of the commutes are less than half an hour and you can find better parking space, but you don't get the new york neighborhoods.

$2500 for a place in the Wall Street area. Hahaha, good luck. That'd probably get you a studio at best.

the financial district i'm talking about is the one with wall street...didn't know there was another! (shows how little i know about NYC)

i've found a couple promising places in jersey city that are close to the PATH stops, 1BRs for around 2000 with parking included.

LilPima, My cousin actually lives at 2 Gold...i visited her and the place seemed really really cramped. it did seem like a nice clean building with good amenities though. i'll check it out for sure.

and yes, i need a car. Its fully paid off, so garage costs would be the only costs. My gf will be in philly so i'll be visiting her often, and i've got a bunch of friends in poughkeepsie etc. that I will also be visiting often.

I think they also have some brand new apts at Secaucus Junction in NJ, supposedly much bigger than NYC and JC.. I see the billboards on the train every morning.

I pay 665 for 920 sqft. Wonder if that can be found in NY...

EDIT:

And I hear TN has some crazy space for crazy cheap.
