So I just recently moved to Phoenix and I'm staying with some relatives until I find an apartment. I, however, was not prepared for the overwhelming amount of apartments for rent in the greater metro area....

I would like to get something in Scottsdale (yeah yeah I know but I'm young and single :)), but am open to pretty much anything decent and with low crime in the surrounding area. I'm looking at spending at or around $700 a month before utilities.

Anyone have any recommendations for good, affordable places?

Queue "It costs XXX to live where I do" or "That would get you a xxxx in my neighborhood" in the thread.

Such as:

Where I live that wouldn't get you anything but floor space in a house full of mexicans. Srsly - $1000 minimum for any apt here.

Best way to find apartments IMHO was the drive around method. BUT you know nothing about what the place is really like, whether they'll even approve you, (some complexes will deny you based on a single late payment).

So my best experience has been with an agent.

In Scottsdale I would think you might be able to find a studio for around $700 and maybe a 1 bed/1 bath. I'm in Tempe and one would pay almost $600 for a 1 bed/bath, so you might be able to pull it off, but Scottsdale can be quite a bit more expensive so you might have a tough time finding an apartment at that price.

I really don't want to burst your bubble....but for 700 a month you will get a shithole, most likely in south Scottsdale.

Some places in north Phoenix are nice, between the 51 and Scottsdale Rd and north of Thunderbird. Can't go wrong in Tempe or Chandler either. All of those places are better than what you would get in south Scottsdale. Realize that your electric bill in the summer in a 800ish sq ft apartment will be about 180 a month.

On another Phoenix topic - would anyone there be willing to discreetly go drop by a house I own and see the situation for me since I'm not there? Near Camelback and 17. PM if you will.

I'm living in a condo downtown in the arts district/roosevelt row area (4th ave/McKinley) and love it - I can walk to everything and it's a very low traffic area. There's two parts to downtown really - the business part and the historic district/art community part.

All the bars/restaurants I go to are cool little bungalows that are turned into bars and what not. First Friday is a two minute walk.

Cibo, Local Breeze, Royal coffee, lola coffee, fair trade coffee, pasta bar, sens, moira, roosevelt, lost leaf, conspire, breadfruit are all a few blocks away. Suns stadium/Theatre/Diamondbacks/Phx library/Art museum/Heard museum/Science museum are about a mile away, again an easy walk, but even quicker with the lightrail nearby which will also take you down into ASU area.

What do you like to do for fun? If you want to go cougar hunting than Scottsdale is your friend. There's a lot of good food too, but same goes for downtown.

I lived in tempe for a year and liked it, but there's simply too many lights/driving to get anywhere. Same kinda goes for Scottsdale, you'll be doing a fair bit of driving. On the upside if you are really into hiking Pinnacle Peak (which is my favorite climb) is right there.

I pay 850 for everything included for a pretty spacious 1br/1bath w/ nice appliances and whatnot. I live by myself and living downtown can be a bit of a stretch on a budget, but if you get a roommate your options open up quite a bit.

Craigslist will be your friend in this case for certain areas of Phx since so many apts/houses are individually owned.

---

If you are "young and single" there is a downtown asu campus and unless you're hitting up oldtown scottsdale you're gonna run into the more douchebag/club crowd/older people/cougars in Scottsdale...I mean think about it, Arizona as it is is a retirement state and Scottsdale is one of the ritzier/nicer areas to live.

Tempe will have your youngest crowd if that's what you're really interested in though.

w/ the density of clubs in old town scottsdale south to the ASU area? all i have ever seen in them is all the hot girls from ASU and the rest of the valley, mid-north scottsdale is for the cougar hunting.

Blue Martini in North Phoenix is probably where I have seen the highest density of cougars. There are a lot of old douchey men there as well. But Cougars galore, if thats what you are into...
