Apartment Lease Question

I am getting an apartment with my GF in a couple of months and was wondering if we should both be on the lease or just one of us. Would I be better off doing one or the other?

Most apartment managers require that all persons over the age of 18 living in the unit be put onto the lease.

My GF and I are in the process of moving in together. I initially met with the landlord yesterday and when I told him it would be the two of us, he required that we both sign the lease. Not sure of the advantages/disadvantages, but he seemed to have a strong preference for this.

The reasoning is pretty simple really. Suppose that you and your GF moved into the apartment with just you on the lease. Now suppose (hypothetically) that months down the road you and your GF break up, you move out and she stays. You'd still be on the lease, but not living there, while she'd be living there and not on the lease.

I always get the girlfriend/wife to sign the lease. That way when the lease is broken you are more likely to collect a judgement from garnishing the females wages.

The boyfriend/husband/baby daddy already has his pay garnished for child support. Only one garnishment at a time and child support comes first.

both people on lease. That way both of you have to pay the rent under contract. If one of your names are not listed, technically one of you could move out and leave all the rent to the other person - which would be sucky.

True.
