Apartment hunting: What is an efficiency?

I'm guessing they must be small, since they seem to be the cheapest thing you can rent. I'm looking for something short term and cheap, it would seem like this would fit the bill.

eficiency....

1 corner for bedroom, one corner for kitchen, one corner for living room, and the fourth corner has a sheet hanging from it w/ a bucket that is used for the bathroom.

In other words, if you are a bachelor on a budget, they'll do in a pinch, otherwise, look elsewhere.

Barn stall with piped in water and electricity here in Western Pennsylvania = $200 a month

if you're paying 1500 for an efficiency in new york, you're getting ripped off. well, depends on where exactly you live and what the building is like. but still, we paid 1000 a month for a 1 bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom this summer in upper manhattan.

no i would never pay $1500 for an efficiency...but my girl does...
It's on Central Park South though thats why so expensive.
