Apartment Hunting Tips

Anyone have any tips for someone new to apartment hunting?

I have lived on my own for a year now but was never faced with the challenge of looking for a place, I sort of just fell into this place through a friend when I moved out to start school.

Any tips, tricks, questions to ask? Any general *HELPFUL* advice is welcome.

Thanks 🙂

Newspaper classified ads are a goldmine.

This is mainly where I have been looking, and just biking around town passing different complex's. I have found a few prospects that I am pursuing.

Same way you found the first one is good. Just ask around, people living in apartments would know if there's a vacancy in their building and could give you a lot of information about the place you wouldn't get otherwise. If there's no vacancy in their buildings, they might have friends who could help you out as well.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind, I need to really pursue every resource, the house I live in right now is going to be sold.

Check the community swimming pool on a warm weekend afternoon.
Lots of oldies, children
Lots of coeds, recently graduated women

You can thank me later.

Personally I used a mixture of references and websites to find my current apartment. I recommend using forrent.com and apartments.com for some searching along with the other recommendations so far.

I used rent.com and then get the free $100 which was cool. However, I live in an area w/ a lot of apartment complexes. If you live in an area w/ fewer apartments than newspapers work. Or just drive around.
