I hate living in apartments: Cliff notes at bottom.

I live in an apartment complex (8 buildings with 12 apartments each), and each building has two washers and one dryer.

There has always been problems here with people leaving their laundry in the washer and/or dryer after it has finished (as long as eight hours). Most of the major offenders are the families who came from Sudan (quite a few here). They seem start their laundry and go shopping or go to work, and then get them out when they come back.

A couple of days ago, I got home at 5:00 pm, and had one load of laundry to do. The laundry room was quiet, but there was one basket sitting there with clothes in it.

I get my load together, go out there, and look in the washers, and sure enough, there are clothes in there that have already completed their cycle.

I leave my clothes out there, and go back into my apartment and wait. An hour later I go back out, and nothing has changed. I decide to cook and eat dinner first before taking their clothes out.

I go back out around 7:30 pm, and the clothes are still there. I get a clean bag from my apartment, take out one of their loads, and put their clothes in it. I sit the bag down next to the washer.

I go back out a 8:00 pm to get my laundry, and the person has decided to start drying their first load (they weren't out there, but the dryer was running).

I take my clothes and put them back into my basket to wait and dry them.

I go back out about 8:30 pm, and their is a note written in pencil stating:

"You dont ever touch my clothes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was like WTF? No sooner did I read this, I heard someone running up the stairs toward the laundry room. It was the psycho Sudan 40+ guy who lives downstairs from me (he kind of just wanders around the parking lot all times of the day acting like he is doing karate).

He starts to scream at me "You don't ever touch my wifes clothes" and gets right in my face and clinches his fist. I told him, "don't leave them in there for two and half hours and I won't".

He then acts like he is going to hit me, and I tell him he better think twice about it. I tell him to get the fvck out of my face. He agains tells me that "I will never touch his wifes clothes". I tell him the next time I will throw them in the garbage.

Well, there is a lot of threats on his part (payback, damage to my stuff, etc.), and a lot of cussing and screaming from both, but nothing happened...........well he did grab my basket and throw it my leg, but it didn't hurt.

I go in because I am ready to beat the piss out of the guy, but being 28, I know better than doing so (and I have just received two promotions at my job in the last 6 months and I don't feel like going to jail).

The next day, I give the letter to the landlord with a letter of what happened. She put a sign up stating that clothes left more than thirty minutes will be removed. She also told him if he does anything he is evicted or if any of my items become damaged, he will be responsible.

Cliff Notes:

1. Waited 2 1/2 hours to do one load of laundry

2. Put their clothes in a bag

3. Crazy downstairs neighbor thinks about fighting me

4. Jerry Springer like argument starts

5. Take crazy neighbors letter to landlord

6. Crazy neighbor is told not to do anything again or he gets evicted.

Did you ask him if it was OK if you touched his clothes instead of his wife's

Edit: You waited long enough, and put them on a clean bag.. next time throw them out

No, between the spit that was hitting my face, and the level of his voice, I didn't ask.

The only thing I can think of concerning his wife's clothes, is maybe his religion or culture being from the Sudan. He has lived in the U.S. for two years I think (this is what the landlord told me).

If thier stuff is done, and just sitting there taking up a machine, it gets thrown onto the counter.
Fortunately, I now have an apartment with a washer and dryer, so I don't have to deal with this anymore.

No time. The washers and dryers are on a computerized reservation system. I just go down in the morning, swipe my card and pick which 90min time slots I want. If any clothes are in a washer or dryer when my 90min comes up, they are quietly moved to the backet.

Half hour TOPS. If it's in there any longer and is unattended it's getting bleached.

This December (when my lease is up), I am either going to get an apartment like that or maybe a townhome (I am not really interested in settling down in Iowa at this time).

Yup, pretty efficient isn't it, you can reserve up to a week in advance apparently (haven't planned that far ahead). The only problem is when the person reserving it forgets and doesn't show up, then the system won't let anyone use it until 30min are up. The card is tied in with the rent account so it is just automatically added to my rent at the end of the month so no fumbling with coins.

It was very hard.

You know what upset me the most about the whole thing?

The laundry room is on the second floor (where my apartment is) and when I went back into my apartment my two boys (four and three) came running asking if there was a bad man out there (my wife had taken them to their room when she heard the yelling).:frown:

That is pretty cool (kinda like something out of the Jetsons).

I now have washer/dryer hookups in my new place so this isn't a problem anymore. However, I know what you're saying because my last place was like that.

To be fair, I often left my clothes in there due to my forgetful nature...but I always left the laundry basket on top of the machine so if some one needed it they could just toss the clothes in the basket. I had to do that a few times when other people forgot, nobody got in an uproar about it.

I did feel pretty weird picking some girls underwear out of the dryer though, even if they were clean. I'm glad to be rid of that kind of setup. Plus they were coin-op POS machines and the dryers worked like crap.

Geez you guys are harsh!
In the last complex I lived in that had a laundry room, all of the washers and dryers were free, if a load was done in a washer I would either move it into a free dryer and move the persons basket with it or if there wasnt an available dryer put it in the basket and move it to the counter.
No one ever griped at me, and several thanked me for putting their items in the dryer.

You took girls underwear out of the dryer? OMGWTBBQ!!!! You never took a pair for yourself???? OMG

Ahem, sorry to diress like that... My apartment building washer/dryer machines are kind of expensive. So i go to a laundry mat with. They have washer machines that that can hold 40 lb of clothing and cost 3.60 or a 55 lb machine that cost 4.40. I actually go with the girl that i know and we just shove all of our colors in their and have no prob. Last week it cost us almost $6 to do all of our colors and dry them.
