Apartment complex impounds my bike???

All three of my asshole roomates keep their bikes inside, but since I do 40-60 miles a week commuting on mine, I got the short end of the stick and I keep mine outside. The freaking apartment complex stole it last night and claimed that I was "obstructing the breezeway"

WTF?

now I need a new 40$ lock... fantastic....

I'm not much for revenge, but this is the last time these assholes have d!cked ME over :|

Edit: srry, original U/L failed

what I really don't get is how they get "obstructing the breezway" when your bike is chained up under a stairwell, cordined off by a 3 foot tall steel handrail that completley blocks off space under aformentioned staircase.

Their justification is that they just installed bike racks (more than 100 yards away and less than 36 hours ago...) and now they're just acting on building code

something the pic did not make clear, the steps are low on the top of the picture and increasing in elevation as you go down the picture

i have my bike kept in the same location and never had any problems with it...is it really against 'building code'

kick their ass seabass

Ask them where it is written that it's not allowed to do that. Also apartment complexes do not have the right to destroy your property (cutting a lock). They can see somethign they don't like and then call the police to come and do that. They have overstepped their bounds. Depending on how far you want to go, you could ask a local attorney if apartment complexes have the rights to do that sort of thing. THen tell them they owe you a new lock. Or jsut pay them $40 less on next month's bill.

Buy the 40 dollar lock you cheapskate. Rules need to be enforced or people like you would abuse the privilege and obstruct other apartment dwellers with more than bikes.

wait, i'm really confused.

What did your roommates have anything to do with this?

Why did you call them assholes if they keep their bikes inside?

When you the last line about revenge and stuff, are those assholes referring to your roommates or the apartment?

did your roommates call the apartment people to impound your bike?

Please clarify.

Here's something else to think about.
Most people don't know this, but if your roommates bikes are steel, bringing them inside can destroy them. Moisture will condense inside the frame from the temp. changes and they will start to rust from the inside out.
If they are aluminum of course this isn't a factor.

Sucks that they cut your lock.

I keep my bike inside. I'm not leaving a $1000 bicycle out in the rain where thieves can get at it.

Of course, there are about 20 bike racks around my apartment building, so I wouldn't have a problem finding somewhere to put it if I did leave it outside.

My bikes all live in my garage at home. No way would I leave a $1000 bike outside.

complain, it doesn't seem right. living in an IAC (irvine apartment 'community', the apartments that have a monopoly on all the housing near UC:Irvine) i see bullsh!t like that all the time, i would argue and fight it, see what happens.

no warnings from Apt?

a few weeks ago they posted that they "didnt want any obstructions to the breezeway, including bikes, grilles, trash... w/e" Seemed fair enough... one problem though... there isn't a single damned thing other than the "help I'm being raped" emergency boxes to chain a bike to for at least a mile in any direction. The complex is new, all of the trees are saplings.... With my roomates jamming the bikes they never use in every single slice of open space in our apartment (foyer closet, foyer behind door and utility room), I'm the odd man out and I got left outside. Not even 36 hours after they installed new bike racks (or said they installed, I have yet to locate one anywhere near where they say they are), "every bike that has been left outside has been impounded-" another lie.

This wouldn't grill me so much if I didnt go to such great legnths every time I locked up to make sure that I lifted my bike over the railing to make sure it was well out of the walk space.... its a major hazard at some other buildings with 6 or 7 bikes.... none of whom extended my kind of curteosy... but this is rediculous :|

This bike is nothing special. It's a 9 year old Giant Yukon with almost nothing stock on it aside from the cogs and chain (almost everything has broken at least once)... it's just my only bike any my main means of transport....

There's nobody to complain to either... the company is College Park Communities.... they're a sydicated property management company that leases land on university property, develops, and then runs the housing for the school.... it's a loophole for the schools in an era of funding freezes... The campus police told me that I was 'wasting their time'

I think I should get the real police involved.

Were they wrong in cutting my lock? (the lock is all I have right now :| )

You don't get the police involved, it has nothing to do with them. Write the property management company a letter asking for compensation for your bike lock, and if they don't give it to you, take them to the housing tribunal. Make sure that in your letter you say that you will be "forced to seek legal advice" or something. You will get a discount on your rent equal to your losses, if you win.

even though you feel like your bike was out of the way, if they have a policy of no bikes there, it would be impossible to enforce if they let you keep your bike there.

basically, you have nothing to be upset about. It's also not their fault about your roommates taking up all the space. If you all pay equal shares of rent then I'd bring your bike inside, even if it's the way.

Why would you leave your stuff outside? Especially if living in an apartment? Especially living in an urban area? 😕
