Apache module authentication

I'm running Apache 1.3.x on Netware and am looking for a module for authentication. Basic auth with a user file and password file (encrypted or not). I can't get the mod_anon to work because the module crashes the server when I run it, but mod_NDS works fine for authentication off my tree...I'm just looking for something that's .htaccess complient and simple for a user to implement. Any favorite modules?
