apache error = forbidden, ssh does not work: server hacked, or just really sick?

I have entered the twilight zone of server administration: I had to leave town suddenly, and my backup freebsd expert is visiting his parents across the country. My server is replying as stated in the title.
I have freebsd 4.8, Apache 2.043, sendmail and popper. It has been steady for 8 months, works fine, I keep it patched.
I tried to retrieve pop from my yahoo, and it replied connection terminated. Not good. I had Sshed into it just last night, and also browsed pages, retrieved mail, all without any exitement.
I have a second site on the server, it is also giving me a forbidden message.
Does this sound like a breached machine, or one with a major malfunction?

My FreeBSD server went down on me because all of it's mbufs were full. This caused all network
activity to stop. Luckily my co-lo is local so I was able to go to the machine and fix it. Turned out
it was the JSetiDoor proxy I was running that caused this.
