AP what I'm looking for?

I've got a room on the other side of my house with 2 PCs, 360, PS3 that I'd like to connect to a single wireless-N device. I'd like to be able to share large files between the PCs as well as stream to the 360/PS3 via a wired connection.

Would something like this be appropriate for what I want to do?

If it's relevant, my main home office has a FIOS connection feeding into a D-Link DIR 655. Would buying another DIR-655 and configuring it as an AP be a better solution than buying a strictly AP-only device?

Best bet is to get something that supports Workgroup Bridge mode. This bridges a single wireless connection from the AP to your central ap/router. Then you attach devices with a cable to it. Others call this bridge mode but the technical term is Workgroup Bridge.

I don't deal with home gear so don't really know which N APs/routers support it.

Haha, anyone familiar with home equipment want to chime in here?

I threw "Workgroup Bridge Mode" into Google and some expensive Cisco items got returned to me. :x

Thanks for the input! Coincidentally enough, that particular device is on sale from Newegg today for $65. That worked out well. 🙂

Alright, I went out and picked up another DAP-1522 since the one from Amazon kicked the bucket (and they don't have stock to replace it with, wtf!). This thing is working, but man it's slow. I got better performance (Steam download and PC-to-PC file transfer) out of a Linksys WGA54G feeding into a CompUSA brand 10/100 hub.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? Hell, I'll use a wireless G adapter and switch again if moving up to N is going to result in more crap performance like this.

Yep, it's definitely the latest firmware. Do you have yours setup as a bridge like I do? Are there some magical settings that I should be using?

What's your signal strength like? I don't know how big your house is or how many obstructions you have, but attenuation can affect signal quality and kill the speed.

Signal seems to bounce around in the range of 76-84%. The Linksys adapter that this thing replaced got a slightly stronger signal (didn't drop below 80%, but don't recall it ever getting to 90%), and I'm assuming this is because of external vs internal antenna.

This adapter is sitting in the exact same spot as my old Linksys one.

@Kevnich2 - What router are you using?

And a slight hijack of my own thread!

So like I said, I have Verizon FIOS. Would I be able to take one of these MoCA devices and feed it down into a switch that I could have all of this stuff connected to? Anyone have experience doing something like that?

I don't mind wires in my entertainment room, I just don't want wires running down the hall from my office to entertainment room (hence the original wireless AP/bridge question).
