Story

I suppose the first casualty in war is really the truth. Does this mean we can now forget about extracting balanced reporting from CNN and NBC? I actually thought they were doing a pretty good job this time around.

<< Israel threatened unspecified legal action >>

Your thread title comes off rather different that what it actually is. They don't threaten death, just legal action.

What, are they saying the are now buds with johnny cockaroach? :D

Q: What is the history of the expression "oy vey"?

A: The answer to questions like this one are best found in Leo Rosten's "The Joys of Yiddish," an informative and fun classic, accessible at many libraries and bookstores.

It literally means "oh, pain," but it is used as an all purpose exclamation to express anything from "trivial delight to abysmal woe," according to Rosten. Vay comes from the German word Weh, meaning "woe," so the expression developed at a time and a place where Jews were speaking Yiddish (Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries).

I'm really not surprised... the Israeli army even censored an Israeli news station too a while ago. What happened was that the Israeli army was going through palestinian homes by blowing up walls in between them and moving through the holes. In one incident, the israeli army seriously injured a palestinian woman and injured several others when they detonated a wall. When the ambulances came for the injured woman, the israeli soldiers didn't let the ambulance pick her up and she died. An israeli television crew picked the whole thing up on camera and broadcasted the story and pissed off the israeli army and they barred any future israeli camera crew from following them. So much for trying to find out the truth.

<< Good for israel. If the US said don't go, CNN would listen. >>

Yeah good for them. Now they can commit atrocities against those who commit atrocities against them.

yeah...i watched that on 20/20 or Dateline a few weeks back. Caused quite a stir in Israel and it caught the men involved by suprise. Kinda sucks watching her daughter weep as her mom slowly dies and is denied any medical assistance.

It's kind of hard to mount a military campaign when everything your troups are doing is broadcast live for the enemy to see and react to. It kinda blows the element of surprise, ya know?

They are not complaining that they are reporting, they are complaining that they are broacasting:

<<Israel threatened unspecified legal action yesterday against CNN and NBC for ignoring military orders and broadcasting from the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, and revoked the credentials of two Abu Dhabi TV journalists.>>

The US does not allow live broadcasts from it's military actions, why should Israel?

As for not allowing ambulances in or near the action, we've already seen Palestinian ambulances filled with explosives. Tell me, if your enemy was known to fill ambulances with explosives to kill people like you, would YOU let one near you? Anything the enemy uses as a weapon in war becomes a legitimate military target. The Palestinians should just be thankfull the Israelis are blowing up every ambulance they see out of self defense.

CNN or NBC has never had balanced reports about the middle east, ever.

I was talking to a friend of mine who lives in canada and he is just shocked how biased the news reports are. I mean go look at the cnn and nbc news pages then compare the news reports there to bbc, reuters and guardian.

Well, I think it's hard to report on the issue if they're not allowed into those sites and are being shot at.

<<The organization said in a statement Tuesday that it has sent a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) protesting the military's attempts to block reporters from working in Bethlehem, Ramallah and Qalqiliya. >>

<<The group said that troops on Monday fired on an armored car used by NBC correspondent Dana Lewis and his two-person crew. The car was clearly marked as a media vehicle, the group said. No one was injured.>>

What i find interesting is the lack of outrage at the 'liberal biased media' from the conservatives when it comes to the coverage of the israeli/palestinian conflict. In fact, they seem to just believe every word of it.

When Sharon ordered the demolition of the homes of 300+ palestinians and it drew outrage from the whitehouse, the UN, and even members of sharon's own cabinet, it got very little press here. However, i saw a lot of coverage from international news sources such as the BBC.

A1, I personally see a different take on the issue.

The satellite channel's staff "have for some time operated crude anti-Israel propaganda and have been taking a hostile and combative attitude, creating uproar in the Arab world," the statement said, adding that the station showed "utter disregard" for Israeli military censorship rules.

I think its simple-they simply dont want international media seeing them murder and execute freely.

No, these are two separate issues. One is the forbidding of CNN and NBC to broadcast from the zone. The other is the complete expulsion of the Abu Dhabi (read: pro-arab) press. One is to keep live broadcasts off the air, the other is to keep dangerous and more than likely untrue propaganda off the air. I mean, come on, would the US have allowed Nazi propaganda papers to freely roam WWII war zones?
