Let me first say, do you even know what the smartphone market looks like? Too expensive? You obviously have zero clue.....

As for unlocking? Yeah what other companies locked their cell phones? Yeah EVERY cellular company locks the freakin phone.

At least make some valid complaints.......

And no i don't own an iphone because I can't have a camera on any cell phone I own......

Use the Apple Forum.

On the "problems", the vast majority are hacked ones that have been unlocked. Apple said they were gonna lock 'em back up and they've followed through. Which is why anyone with a brain would not update in the first place...

do *you* even know what the smartphone market looks like? in March 2006 I got my PPC-6700 for $75 with a 2 year contract through sprint. It has Wifi, EVDO (much faster), camera, unlimited storage, and a plethora of other features.

The key difference is that that phone was able to be discounted. However, Apple wanted to reap as much money as possible.

Most cell phone companies also don't care if you do unlock it however.

They also don't disable the use of 3rd party software either

* New encryption system. Ready for this? NONE of the existing third-party iPhone programs?including ?unlocking? hacks, non-Apple ringtone generators, and most of the cool programs I demo?ed in my Times video today?will work anymore, and they?ll all be erased from your phone when you apply the update. (Let?s see how long it takes the hackers to figure out a way around it.)

If MS somehow started disabling third party apps for whatever reason, we'd all have a bounty on Bill Gates' head, but this other evil empire is able to get away with a lot more..

If they didn't care then why would they lock it to begin with?

As to 3rd party applications, that is a valid complaint.

got my 8gb for $290. I love using it unlocked on tmo's netowrk. I have no problems with not updating the fw, just wondering if 3rd party apps will be supported anymore for the older firmware.

The checkerboard fix would be neat, although as mentioned before it's not a dealbreaker

When the Razr first came out on Cingular exclusively, i don't recall anyone bitching about it being locked to Cingular. With ATT paying as much as they are for exclusivity, they'd be stupid if there weren't provisions in the contract that required Apple to make a good faith effort to stem the unlocking attempts. Those who chose to unlock their phones would be stupid to think that Apple wouldn't try to relock it with future firmware releases. The only reason I can see why people would want to unlock their iphone is so that they can use it abroad without roaming. The complaints about the two year contract is bogus, if you're in the market for a cell phone like the iphone, its not as if you're not already paying 40-100 dollars a month for your plan. Plus, if you don't have an unlimited data plan with your iphone, you're going to have a hefty monthly bill with all the data you'll be downloading.

Apple is simply doing what it has to. When they've invested as much as they have in the product, can you blame them for trying to make as much money as they can off of it? The people who are complaining are either jealous that they don't have one or hate apple products. No, i'm not an Apple fanboi, I just find it ridiculous that people are trashing the the phone because of the company that makes it. I don't think there has ever been a phone on the market that has been such a lightning rod for criticism. I have an Iphone and its a great device that is far from perfect. The lack of a user replaceable battery, the weak speakerphone, lack of voice recognition or quick redial are all legitimate complaints that will most likely be addressed in future versions of the phone. That being said, it is a remarkable device with a revolutionary interface that makes mobile web browsing a breeze.

I stand by my original opinion. They did a fine job with the gui and touch-screen design. Marketing was great... Testing and quality control is where Apple lacks. I won't ever buy another apple product if I can help it after my ipod experience with them last year. They don't care about their customers. AMEX saved me when the ipod I bought was DOA and they wounldn't issue a refund.

If you ever buy anything from them, make sure you buy through a reseller...you'll have better luck getting refunds, service, etc...
