AOpen Combo Drive Issue

Just bought the AOpen COM5232 Combo drive (Boxed as Rosewill). Updated firmware & am using bundled Nero Express 5.5 (latest version).

I am using Sony CD-R disks rated at 48x, but Nero won't burn faster than 32x...Why is that?

Also when using DVD Shrink or DVD X Copy Xpress...I have tried to use the AOpen to read the DVD and my NEC 1300A to write the copy, it doesn't work. I have to use the NEC for both tasks. Any ideas why?

Are you using CDR or CDRW discs? It's apparently limited to 32X with CDRW.

In the recorder properties dialog (in the select recorder menu) you can try unchecking the write control option. It may be "generic write control enabled" in yours, it will be on the lower right of the dialog box. This feature is supposed to help determine the best speed to burn at.

You might also try some other disc brands.

Also remember that the maximum speed isn't reached until the outer edge of the disc, so make sure you're writing a full disc worth of data.

Yes, some burning software will check the speed rating of the media (often pre-burned onto the media in the media ID block along with the mfr's name and dye type, etc.) and won't let you burn faster unless you disable that feature. Also some new drives have a feature called "SmartBurn" or similar, that will test the media and considers the mfr's rating too. And it won't let you burn faster than its test allows w/o disabling that feature - unfortunately, sometimes firmware-based features can't be disabled...
. Just remembered! It also depends on the source of the data to be burned. Most software will test the transfer rate capability between the source drive and target drive. Perhaps that's the best your source-target combo can do. Common when doing 'On-the-Fly' copies - optical to optical... But don't worry - be happy! If all you're getting is 32x on higher rated media, you are getting a much higher quality end product than you would if burned at full speed. I almost never burn at more than 24x even when I can. And sometimes as low as my burner can go (8x) if what I'm making is an audio CD for use on a cheap portable player.
