PC100 Ram ( 2 32mb sticks )
(Slot 1)P2 233 Cpu currently

I have played around with the bios, and I know it has a great OCable bios but well the 233 sucks. I really just want to upgrade the cpu so I can run Seti on it as I have this board and memory just laying around doing nothing currently

Powerlink adapter(?) + what cpu ?

I would replace the ram, you can get a 256 meg PC133 SDRAM pretty cheaply most anywhere - check the FS forum.
My fastest cpu on a BX board is the P3 1000e slot1 secc2. Currently running 1.2ghz with retail hsf.
I will be replacing the hsf as soon as I find a good one somewhere, then I will be running it at least at 133.
I got my cpu here:
http://www.bananapc.com/Products/product_info.asp?product_id=1684
Even with 2nd day air it was only about $109.

Im still running my Aopen AX6BC board. I love it. However, if you want to save money and not go the P3 route, What I did was buy a slocket and installed a 900 mhz celeron. I am running 448 or something of pc133 ram. Such a cheap upgrade how can I resist?

I use the computer to run TSC and also to run p2p apps.

Or u can take my 400 or 333 celeron cpus off my hands.

I .

Sounds nice to me but how are Seti times on a Celeron 900 ?

8 to 9 hours unless you can run @ 133fsb. Seti is very dependant on fsb and L1 cache.
A P3 933 running 133 fsb does seti WU's in 6.5 hrs
My system with the P3 1000 @ 1.2 is doing a WU every 5.5 hrs, if I can get the fsb up to 133 I believe I can shave off another 20 to 30 minutes for each WU. (Work Unit)

K the PIII it is

Just have to pick some ram from FS/T and a HD too.

Does the AXBC have any type of pci/agp divider at 133 ? ( if not than I have no need for pc133 ram or a better HSF )

Thanks Wiz :)

Ha - computer as investment - very cool joke there Sudheer Anne ;)
A computer is no more than a black hole on your desk that sucks in all available money and credit.
Never an investment. ;)
Only lesser and greater wasters of time, energy and money.

XBox,

I am still running two of these motherboards; they are very, very stable and easy to overclock. You can pick up a Celeron 566 and overclock it to 850 for $25 somewhere with a Slot 1 adapter. A Pentium 3 slot 1 chip may run you $75-$90. Memory is the best overclock that you need; get a 256mb stick for $40 PC133 and add it to your two 32mb sticks.
I have forgotten the divider at FSB133; I recall that it is automatic however at 66 and at 100. So, it is not a choice to "lock" it.

I still think it is better to upgrade for under $200; no need to reinstall anything.

XP1600+ - $54
Epox board - $100
256 PC2700 ram - $80 -$100
300 watt PS - $45-50

Don't have $300 to spend for a PC that will just run seti :p

With a Pentium 3 or Celeron upgrade I can do it around $150 :p

XBoxLPU, there are a lot of ways of looking at it. I've been doing seti pretty much since the start so I've thought about this a lot.
My tendancy is to upgrade existing machines as far as they can go and then start new ones with all new parts.
I have a sweet little black box on the floor right now that's assembled but I haven't installed an os yet, at the same time I broke a P3 700e chip so I had to buy another cpu for that box. I went with the P3 1000 so I could maybe oc it to 1333 or higher (hopefully once I get that Alpha from JmsAndrsn).
If I can get 1.4 or more out if it I'll be thrilled - if only 1.33 then I will be happy.
If you upgrade this box and then build a kickass AMD rig you will have the seti output from both to your account.
Once I get all the machines here running it will total 5 in my house adding up to maybe 20 seti WU's per day. Not bad output, and the machines are being used a lot of the time for web browsing, email, WP & games. My own is used for dev and entertainment.

So do you crunch seti for Team AnandTech? Do you know we have a DC forum here where there is a very active seti team? Come on over and say hi.

My new box is a black case with black Lite On dvd drive, black Lite On CDRW, black floppy. It has a Leadtech TV2000XP Deluxe tv tuner and Geforce 2 video along with some kind of dolby sound system. I put in a AMD 1800+ and 768 megs of PC2100 ddr along with a 60GB Seagate Barracuda drive.
It will become my new station and I will cycle my old station down to the rest of the family. That's they way it goes here, I have enough extended family to take all the old AMD K6-2 450's I ever built years ago, so as the newer machines come online I can ship off the older ones to relatives who are extremely pleased to receive them. Of course that's after my wife and kids are done with the systems ;).

I am running two kick ass PCs for Seti ( IMO ) currently

My Main PC
[*]AMD XP 2000+ Unlocked @ 2200+ ( 180X10, 1.8Vcore)
[*] Y-tech 40DBA 80mm fan on an AX-7
[*]512 Samsung PC3200
[*] GF4 4400 ( running dual monitors )
[*] Maxtor 40gb, and Maxtor 60gb
[*] WU times ~3:00 - 3:30

Seconday PC
[*] PIV 1.6A @ 2.32 ( 145 FSB, 1.6V core )
[*] 128mb Crucial PC2100 ( 1t Command )
[*]Velocity 128[*]
[*]Maxtor 40gb[*]
[*]WU Times ~3:00 - 3:30

I can't OC to 133 FSB as Deskstar and I have shared PMs and to quote him :

First set Jumper # 23 to pins 3-4 to force the AGP divider to be 2/3 rds of the FSB . If you don't "foce" the AGP divider, then it is set automatically by the motherboard, based on the FSB seeting of the chip itself which may not be what you want. (Ref: http://www.aopenusa.com/tech/faq/mb/ax6bc.htm if that link is still active). That jumper will make the AGP = 66 with a FSB of 100...but, as the FSB is increased above 100, the divider stays at 2/3rds so that at 133, your AGP bus will be running at a very, very high 89 (too high for most cards). So, the board has methods of staying in spec with AGP adn PCI at FSB=100. But, as you go higher and certainly above 117, it cannot be set to spec for those higher FSB settings. You take your chances in those ranges. In reality a FSB of 117 is about as high as you may be able to go even with a good CPU and memory.

I do think my PC100 ram can handle 117 FSB ( if not than I can always buy some from FS/T here ). And what is the best HS/F to use ?
