I'm hearing hiss in the rear speakers but no sound. Fronts and subwoofer work fine. (Altec Lansing 54). running Win 2K. Configured the Yamaha in sounds and multimedia dialogue of control panel for surround and surround 5.1, is there something else I should be doing?

I've double checked all the cables, front and rear lines are plugged into those holes in sound card, go to two appropriate holes in the woofer panel.

Still new to Win 2K, thanks for any help.

What driver version are you using? In ver 2228, I don't think 4 speakers (or S/PDIF) was working correctly. Aopen only shows ver. 2232 (2 speaker only). The newest version is 2240. Here is an excellent resource for Yamaha drivers. Note that all brands of cards which use the Yamaha YMF744 & YMF754 chipset use the same driver. The newest version for Win2K is Labway's 2240. Use it instead of the one on the CD that came with the card. Their site is down right now - check back later or find another using version 2240.

M: Thanks for shedding some light and for the source of new drivers, appreciate it. I maybe have contributed to the confusion with a brain fade...I was only trying out .wav files, which I don't think engage surround sound. []. Appreciate the help, I'll install the new drivers anyway, and glad to have a new driver site in my files.

:)
