I have a build PC with a AK73 mother board that keeps rebooting on OS load, It will install the OS fine, and most dos functions(memory scan etc.) seem to work fine but when ever I boot into the OS (win2k and 98se) I get errors or reboot. (exception error blue screens with something along the lines of "error occureed in "HEX" in VXD VMM(01) +" In 98 it was a similar error only it VXD Vmouse. I was thinking memory but It has checked out, so has HD and PS. The only other thing I can think is the motherboard has gone, Specificly the chipset. It has a fan on the northbridge but That fan is a crappy sleeve bearing and died sometime ago. I don't think the Northbridge requires a heatsing or fan, but right now that is the only thing I can think that might have gone bad. Any input would be great. I don't really want to replace the board unless I know it is for sure the problem.

Thanks.

What about BIOS updates? The NB FAN is useless when you're not overclocking or having the system on for longer periods of time for folding@home. If you could try a different brand or spec of memory, that would or could be a possible answer. Most phantom reboots are caused by poor phasers or high current draw or insufficent power on an important component such as memory, agp or PSU. If you could quite possibly borrow, rent, steal or purchase a single memory module from a local mom&pop shop, then that could eliminate confusion. I usually keep 1-2 compatible DIMMs for tech work. Funny thing is, my memory is generic and works in all intel and VIA,SiS,Ali based systems. I tried to install a Crucial micron module in a i810e board and it refused to boot.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, PoE.

Yea I tried a different DIMM too, with the same results. Not sure about bios updates. The computer has worked fine for the last year, and just recently it started to degrade with random blue screens on boot, eventually it wouldn't even boot in to the OS (XP) so I reloaded 98 and 2k, with same results. my other thought was a bad DIMM slot but I tried them all with the same result, unless they all went bad. I'm at a lose.

You're under warranty with that board AFAIK. You should get on the horn with Aopen California. They are nice people.
