Aopen 1240 DVD-ROM not recognizing normal CDs?

Something odd happens to my DVD drive... It plays DVDs very well, but when I insert a normal CD, it doesn't recognize the damn media. Sometimes I have to eject and then insert the CD again to make it work. What could be the problem?
