AOL9 and IE6SP1 incompatible?

Reloaded HP Pavilion 4550 from OEM Win98 CD, then ran Windows Update including IE6SP1 install. Then loaded AOL9 and it freezes.
 
I believe there has always been some problems using IE6 with 98. Also, I've never used AOL, but have read of conflicts between IE and the AOL browser????
