AOL To Buy Redhat!?! · Posted by KillerG @ 7:00 AM ET
Yikes, I am certainly not sure how to feel about this one. But, before I get into that, here is the customary rip from the report over at Washtech...
Officials of AOL, Red Hat and Microsoft declined to comment.
Well of course they did. Kripes. What did anyone expect, open commentary from the principles in a discussion, deal, whatever ya might call it, like this one?
As for my instant reaction to this story, I have to say that I have two very distinct and very different feelings. On the one hand there is the thought of a Linux distro being backed by the gargantuan resources of a company like AOL Time Warner. I mean there is corporation that can definitely put a sh!tload of pressure on Microsoft by promoting an alternative desktop OS. And right there is the crux of my second and completely opposite reaction, the word corporation, I mean. The words corporation and Linux just don't sit well together at all...obviously.
Imagine, a big old nasty and rather conservatively oriented organization getting control of one of the very few successful Linux distros. The complications and implications of that are something that I can only call disturbing.
This story will most certainly be watched very closely by those fond of Linux as we know it.
