AOL suck.. I can't post on these forums from home because I have AOL as my ISP. To quote an Anadtech mod:

"
That one's easier to answer and more difficult to fix. YOU are welcome on AnandTech. AOL is NOT!

AOL has been banned from AnandTech as BOTH an email address and as an ISP. This means that, regardless of your registered email address, you cannot post on AnandTech while you are logged onto AOL.

This action was necessary because, awhile back, we came under constant attack from a very nasty troll who uses AOL as his base. His idea of fun was to challenge the moderators to see how far he could go in vandalizing our forums. When he was banned, he would just register again under another name and continue his activities and then brag about it on other forums.

Unlike every other major ISP we have dealt with under similar circumstances, AOL repeatedly refused to give us appropriate technical assistance to stop him. Our moderators are unpaid volunteers, and we simply do not have time to deal with irresponsible ISP's such as AOL.
"

endquote

Damn irresponsible, and infuriating.

Broadband? Hell, I don't have a hell of a lot of income at the moment. Here in the UK, broadband is kinda expensive, hell net use compared to the States sucks. This will change in the next couple of months now that BT ha been ordered to reduce it's charges. I have free (very fast) net access at uni which is where I usually post from, but for home use AOL charge an extra £10 per month if you want to use an additional ISP as well as them. Scum.

firstly calling AOL an ISP is wrong because there really not that. to be more accurate i would call AOL a content provider with limited internet support. i say this because the only internet service (the I.S. in I.S.P.) AOL provides is web accses they dont provide POP3 email, newsgroups, or anything that real ISP's provide. so there AOL sucks and is for newbie losers.:D

Wrong, AOL does everything a regular ISP does except POP3 e-mail. Poorly maybe, but it still does it.

AOL doesnt provide newsgroups or pop3 mail two things that are key to an isp so i still hold my assertion that AOL is not an ISP

...sorry Yakko! ;)

AOL doesn't provide newsgroups? I guess Keyword: Newsgroups is just my imagination.............

I use my parent's AOL account for e-mail, so yes, I have a good idea what AOL can and cannot do.

Too many 1st time internet users on AOL. They go on forums and aren't sure how to act in their posts. Go figure, AOL sucks!

I was on AOL(ducks automatic gunfire) back in say 95/96 and they had newsgroups then. Don't know if they still have them(smarter now).

<RANT> Ah, bad old AO (as far as I'm concerned, "online" is one word, therefore AOL ought to be AO :) ). My family still uses AO. Well, let me clarify that, my little sister makes my family use AO. At home I use FreeI.NET, which is faster than AO by a good deal and can easily be set up such that the ads from FreeI.NET are not displayed. Here at the University of Pittsburgh, I get to use the 10 Base T Cat 5 network, very nice indeed. Anyway, sis's argument for AO was thus: "I need to be able to IM my friends.", I told her that you can IM from other services, she replied, "But then you have to click to accept IM's from other services." Seems that AO has a pop-up with a stern warning about how it cannot vouch for the intentions of uses of AIM who are not using AO when a person on AO gets and IM from a person using AIM. On a related note, AO hasn't had stable software since 3.0. Ever since I configured my FreeI.NET account on the computer AO has refused to use IE without altering a sh!tload of settings and preferances rendering it useless for FreeI.NET until I manually change everything back. I had to download Navigator 4.06 (the last stand-alone Navigator variant) and force my sis to use that instead of AO for the internet because of the problems with AO altering IE. That and I'm forced to endure countless tirades by my sis about how AO crashes all the time and I should fix it, meanwhile everything else runs fine and is completely stable. </RANT>

Once upon a time, when I was using AOL in trial period, 50-80 junk emails came every day. I don't personally against AOl. But a study shows 20% AOL users are gay. That's interesting. If 50% AOL users are males, does that mean only 60% AOL users are heterosexual? =)
