OK AOL sucks. Now that we got that over with, I am trying to help a friend with a problem.
He had a problem installing a new AOL version so he uninstalled and installed a new version as per their instructions. He made sure to save all his emails into a PFC file properly. Everything seemed ok until he opened his PFC file. There was only mail from '02-'04. '05 to current were all gone. He ran a system restore to before the AOL install and it didn't help.
I have tried looking at it with AOL 8 and 9 and am trying recovery software/undelete utils to see what I can find. Can't find much.
Any ideas? I am currently running a deep scan to recover deleted files but I have a feeling it's not going to help. I think the PFC database was modified to some degree and old emails were destroyed in the process. Meaning, there isn't an old file that was deleted, but the current one was modified and files were deleted within that PFC. If that is the case I really need a revert of the PFC, not find a deleted file. Hope that makes sense.
If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. I looked into the http://www.pwcrack.com/pfc.shtml but it doesn't seem to address this issue, and it's not cheap either at $150 for the app which I doubt would do anything. AOL tech support were as dumb as usual and didn't offer any viable solutions. This is a known issue as I have seen others post the same problem but no resolutions.
Input is appreciated.
Thanks
