AOL Parental Controls.... Any way around them?

Ok,

I know I know... Aol sucks.... Im just tryin to help a friend out who has a completely CRAZY father. Since shes still living at home (shes 20 y/o going to a local college) her dad has total control of the computer. He put the parental controls on her account denying access to EVERYTHING. When i say everything i mean email, web, even most places on aol itself. He also put on a restriction that wont let her sign on past a certain time at night. Does anyone know any way around this, or how to change it somehow?

She's scared to put a free internet provider on there for her to use because her father would erase it and get mad at her. I know, i agree that this is retarted because shes 20 years old, but she needs help and im fresh outta ideas....

Unless you have the master account that can change anything, you're SOL.

Get her to get AIM or something. If she that's her ONLY ISP, then hmm, try a free one like Juno?

All she can do is use AIM. But she cant even send email or anything, do research for class, anything.... Unfortunately for her, AOL is her only option because her dad would get mad if she had anything else.

Yeah...Maybe she could question what he's doing. She probably has never confronted him about it/tried to get him to open his eyes, no?

If she can use AIM, she might be able to use Internet Explorer. AOL might have castrated it, so you could try Opera or something. If none of that works, there's always keyloggers...

I know someone in a similar situation, and it sucks. Many times, parents have little clue when it comes to computers.

I think this individual, being 20 years old, should sit down with her father and have a talk. She needs email and access to sites for research purposes.


She is 20 years old, for Chrissake! Her father sounds like a control freak. She needs to move out if at all possible. Maybe getting together with some friends and renting an apartment?

Many schools forbid the use of Email, but she could use the computers there for research.

There's always web-based email.

I think she uses the computers at school when needed. But her aol email is completely blocked off (no sending or recieving) and living as far away from school as she does, going there isnt always an option.

Where I went to HS, you lost your computer privileges if they caught you in Web based email.

Course, she is in college, many colleges provide Email addresses, do they not?

IMO, I think she should get together with some of her friends, and rent an apartment together. Many college students do this.

I think nearly all of them do now.

But keep in the back of your mind. Whatever help you decide to give her could have very bad effect on the relationship between your friend and her father.
