The announcement came just shortly after the company reported a net loss of $98.7 billion for 2002. Those results included a $45.5 billion fourth-quarter charge related primarily to depreciation in the value of its America Online unit, as well as a first-quarter charge of $54 billion in accordance with accounting rules changes that took effect last year.

That whole conglomeration is falling apart. They knew this would happen, but they went ahead and merged anyway. I'm glad to see that they're well on their way to bankruptcy.

Oh, wait a minute, what am I saying? A good sized chunk of my dad's 401(k) is in AOL. Thinking from that perspective, this is terrible! :Q

The amount they lost was not cash. The majority of it had to do with a write-down in the value of AOL assets.

They had to do this to keep their subscription #'s up because they also had high turnover of customer accounts. They charge more than most local and regional ISP's, and enough people are Internet savvy now that they do not need the hold-your-hand AOL interface and will not pay extra for it.

And Ted Turner is pissed because they tanked the value of his CNN/AOL-TW stock.
