i'm trying to block someone on aim, yet they know i'm online. i tried blocking everyone that i would talk to who would also be on this guy's buddy list (it's a small group that can be easily contained), but he still knows i'm online. how is he doing this? are there programs that allow you to see people that are blocking you? i don't think he just has another aim name that i don't know about and is seeing me from that, i even set it only allow users on my buddy list to contact or view me and took them off.

He probably has a screenname that you don't know about. From there he can see you. You can go to your properties and set "Allow only people on my buddy list to see me" option.

Umm... did you bother to read the last sentence of dolph's post?

Maybe he's using a screenname that you think isn't him but it really is. Otherwise, I don't see how he could tell that you were online.

...or perhaps he's using some other IM client that ignores (or hasn't implemented) the block feature. In which case... umm... you can't do anything about it.

Good luck!

thanks darkjester! there are im clients that don't use block? i didn't even know there were alternate im clients...

dolph,

Yeah, there are alternate IM clients like Trillian and Odigo (I personally like and use Trillian). I don't think they would purposely implement a way to see people who are blocking you, but that could just be something that the client hasn't gotten around to implementing/perfecting (I believe it works correctly in Trillian). There are more than just Trillian and Odigo out there, and also some tools that are add-ons to AIM (like AIM+). You can do a search and find some alternate IM clients and maybe find what is letting this person see when you're online.

Good luck!

It used to just work that way, but on subsequent releases AIM has made it so that you can't see a blocked person on your buddy list, and vice versa.

I am pretty sure that the blocking is done server side. So as far as I know no client can ignore that.
