I've been using IM for a long time now and suddenly I'm getting "users" who are sending me some spam messages. this never happened before, it just started happening. How did they get my SN? Is there a way to tighten security without restricting messages to only people who are on my buddy list?

this has been happening to me a lot over the past couple months, and it's really gotten worse, to the point where i get like three to four everyday. I usually just block them (my block list is like 400 names long... ), and i realized I had a AOL profile up for my SN. So i deleted that because it's always searchable, and in AIM i set it so users can't search for me. So far it's work for me, but it's only been about 2 days. :: knock on wood ::
 
Why do these fvckheads do this stupid sh!t? Spam pisses me off beyond belief. WHY DO PEOPLE WASTE THEIR TIME MAKING IT?! Argh!

Because for the websites that they're promoting, they get money every time someone clicks the link. It doesn't matter whether you explore the rest of the site or not. They already have their cash.
 
the reason you are getting spammed is beccause you are "allowing other users to search for you" turn it off and you will be fine.
 
At least they are all very friendly in their messages. They don't FORCE you to click on the links. 😉 You never know when you might need a quick porn pickmeup.

I used to warn, but it just makes them im you more....

what I did was change my privacy setting to having only people on my IM list see me online.. much better...
 
I never get them on AIM but I get them on Yahoo all the time (using trillian)

The most common one is "hi 24/f/ny......" and I'm not going to include the rest of it :Q
