I have a business client that has an AOL E-mail address that she has had for 20 years and can not part with. I convinced her to not use the AOL application and to use imap through Outlook instead. (she has a couple of other accounts that we will POP through Outlook).
I set up the IMAP account per AOL's instructions using ports 143 and 587. It works randomly and gets "Timeout Connecting to IMAP server half the time." I have tried this from 2 high speed locations (Comcast Cable and FIOS) and from 2 laptops (one brand new set up to test this issue).
AOL's support was no help at all. I tried to have her use the AOL client for AOL mail while using Outlook for the rest but having AOL open basically kills Internet connectivity for other applications. Here are Ping and tracerts with AOL open and closed.

I also thought that I may be able to have AOL mail forwarded to another account but of course AOL does not support that.
I have a strong dislike for AOL and try to get poeple to move off of it whenever I can but this client is pretty much locked in.
Any ideas on how I can get her AOL mail flowing?
