I have AOL Security Edition 9
and often my peecee will not shut down
because some AOL process or something is running
and refuses to go away...!

I have re-installed the darn thing to no avail.

What are AOL Connectivity Services...?
Can I unsintall that and still use AOL
BUT f.c.o.l. ONLY WHEN I CHOOSE TO...?
I also see a swarm of AOL processes always running
in spite of AOL no being launched.

Help...!

AOL is a resource hungry hog. I suggest signing up with a real ISP and dumping AOL for good.

back in the day of aol 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and maybe 6.0 were there better sofware. but the newer aol software is just getting out of control with all this software that it needs to load when your computer boots. back in the day of the versions i listed you never seen that. I think the new 9.0 has like 3 or 4 or maybe even 5 proccess running just when your computer was just at the desktop screen.

oh yeah if you uninstall the aol connectivity services, i believe aol wont be able to connect to the internet or aol itself.

Oh, darn.
You see, the problem is my boyfriend
loves AOL and will not let me uninstall it.
So I need to minimize the aolinterference somehow.
But look...!
It is SUCH a totalitarian user experience.
Here is what they say about << turning off >> their SpyZapper...

Yes. If you don't want AOL SpyZapper to check for spyware and other programs
that can interfere with your online experience, you can easily turn it off.

Go to AOL® Keyword: SpyZapper.
On the SpyZapper - Settings screen, click Do not block any programs; do not check
my computer.
Click the Save button. AOL SpyZapper will stop checking your computer for the specific
spyware and other programs that can interfere with your online experience.

...but then they say the complete opposite...

Turning off AOL SpyZapper DOES NOT turn off AOL Spyware Protection
from conducting regular scans.

AOL SpyZapper uses a scanning mechanism named OptScan.exe.
You may notice OptScan.exe running briefly in Windows® task manager.

...which is like saying, << No, you really cannot, *******. We own your PC.>>

What can I do...?

You're being kind. As far as I'm concerned, AOL software is a virus - and a particularly insidious one at that, since so many computer users think it's benevolent and install it without a second thought.

AOL == junk. Everything they claim to do is done better by more modular software packages developed by vendors who are actually focused on those businesses, and not on selling music videos.

Connectivity = built into Windows. Sign up with any other ISP and throw that crap out.
Virus protection = Norton, McAfee, Avast, Kaspersky.
Malware = Spybot, AdAware, etc.
Everything else = the Internet.

AOL is a resource hog, their protection isn't very good and their stuff never seems to work properly:

On someone's PC, I uninstalled their protection and installed some better stuff: MSAnti-spyware, and it picked up a lot of crap that AOL completely missed. So then I configured MSAnti-Spyware and restarted and loaded up AOL and guess what it was doing - downloading and installing the program that I uninstalled. AOL doesn't give you control over your computer because it assumes you're an idiot, which most computer users are. However, there should never be a software that is this controlling. Thank god for alternatives. IMO these people should not even touch computers because if something goes wrong they freak out and think the world is gonna end. I know at least one person that fvcked up their computer trying to fix something that went wrong. It's sad, I feel sorry for the computers, because I know there are more people out there like him.

I think the best solution would be to upgrade to a better model boyfriend, but if you won't do that try this...

If AOL is like any other dial up service you can use Windows to connect without using any of AOLs software, you might want to check with thier customer support. I think it goes something like this: My Computer --> Control Panel --> Network Conections --> Create New Connection which brings up the New Connection Wizard, although there are other ways to get there. Windows should be able to connect to AOL without using any of AOL's software. Then you can use whatever browser, firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware programs you want without having to have all of AOL's junk on your computer.

Something else to consider is that if you are having problems with AOL then maybe your computer is already infected with spyware and viruses.

The problem with asking people about advice about AOL is that everyone who knows anything about computers doesn't use AOL.
