Here is the timeline as I remember it.
* Yahoo is the king of search engines
* little google starts up in some guys garage,
* Yahoo maintains a fairly good search engine with a clean interface
* google starts to see more traffic
* Yahoo decides to react, they start by putting some crap on the front page
* google starts to see more traffic
* Yahoo gets a bit worried, they start to add more crap to their front page and more intrusive adds
* googe gains more traffic
* Yahoo gets even more scared. They add even MORE crap to the front page, their search results don't improve
* Google gains more traffic and continously improves search results
* Yahoo starts to sink, they add EVEN MORE crap to the front page, a crappy email client, and about 500 different "features" that nobody uses.
* google starts collecting souls.

Why is it that when a company starts to lose ground, their reaction is almost invariably to add more crappy features in the worst possible way to their failing products (rather than trying to improve the product, or even mimic what the competitors are doing).
