AOE/AOE2, and Win7 64-bit?

I upgraded a friend using a retail family pack copy of Win7 64-bit, and he says that he can no longer play Age of Empires, not sure if that is the original one or number 2.

Does anyone know what's up with that? Is there a way to get AOE/AOE2 to work in Win7 64-bit, or is he screwed? Is it that it has a 16-bit installer, or because of the CD-based copy-protection drivers?

You would think that being Microsoft, of all things, they might have some way of making this work with an MS OS.

I have installed and played AoE2 and its expansion on a win7 64-bit system. I ran into no installation issues, so I'm not sure what might be causing your friends problem.

Actually from what i gathered the only way to always stop the messed up colors is to close windows explorer before launching game, but i found a convenient way similar to the alt + tabbing method that worked on vista and no longer in 7 OS, but it only works in online games not single player mode.

What you have to do is right before game is about to start/launch, you alt + tab out of the game into the windows enviornment, wait untill your screen gray's out and/or just looks distorted then alt+tab back into the game and the graphics issue will not occur, but you cannot alt+tab or take focus away during the duration of the game or the issue will appear and will remain untill you restart the game and redo the steps. If you play online this is the most convenient method, i had only tested this on my pc let me know if it works for you guys.

No, he says that it won't even install properly, or maybe run properly. He hasn't even gotten far enough to get graphical glitches.
