Anyone else play in the beta this past weekend?

Well, I created a character and ran around the Jungle and aside from the zone loading ( wow its bad ) the game was running well at about 40fps average with High Graphic Settings.

But when I entered Tortage city things got amazingly bad. Even entering the INN, once I was inside it would freeze every 2 steps. Then I went into the undercity area and thats when it was unplayable....just froze for like 20 seconds at a time every couple steps. My hard drive was grinding away as if I had 5 instances of virus scanner running.

I know theres a ton of stuff going on in the backround... but this was unplayable. Anyone else experience this?

Im running
Athalon 4400 Dual core
8800GT
2 Gig Ram
( seems like this should be good enough ).

I tried the stress test a few weeks ago. It took me about 60 minutes before my new character finally took to one of their servers. Then I got in, ran around on a beach and tried to kill something. But after the first swing of a sword I lagged out.

I did get an beta invite last week but dont have a machine to try it out on atm.

I REALLY wanted to try it out again (just went from 2gb to 4gb of ram, and upgraded to a 8800GT)...

When's the next stress test?

I have an older computer, but I can usually play most games on medium or low settings. AOC was fine at the beginning of the jungle, but when I got to Tortage, I couldn't complete the first quest to get in the city without crashing (BSOD restart).

After a few crashes one day, I decided to wait and and see if a patch would fix it. I tried again the next day and crashed again. Then I thought I would try different Nvidia drivers. I've changed drivers plenty of times for games and HTPC performance, but this time my system got completely corrupted and I couldn't even boot into safe mode or anything.

I spent half the day yesterday trying to recover my system.

Anyway, I searched the forums last night and it seems like a lot of people are having these problems with various hardware.

I think I'm going to give up on this beta (and I've been through plenty of betas over the years). This was one of the worst system crashes I've ever had and it doesn't seem like Funcom has any intention of fixing this. I guess they're just concentrating on Xbox 360 development and aren't putting much time on stability for PC platforms.

I saw a difference going from 2gb to 4gb. And the tests are over, after open beta it's retail.

Ok this scares because my comp crashed while in the city so severe I thought maybe it was my video card overheating. Basically the screen had all sorts of of artifacts on it, which is what I remember back in the days of the first geforce cards that were prone to heating issues. I saw a quick bluescreen o death and my comp crashed. I restarted about an hour latter, got back in game and thats when my HD was grinding and it was just not playable. Hope it did not hose my system.

At least... I am not the only one!

Well... from what I heard from a couple folks in the beta who didn't have major problems... you didn't miss out on a whole lot.

I have a system similar to the OP, and I had occassional freezes in Tortage as well. The game seems to work much better when played in Night mode due to it being single player. There is a debugger program running in the background which won't be the case with the retail version, and the developers are promising upto 40% performance increase over the Open Beta. Also, the open beta client is not the retail version. In fact it is an older client than the PVP weekend version. They are just using it to stress the servers is what I have heard.

From my experience with the game I would say stick to WoW for now. It's just WoW with better graphics and more gore. The questing system isn't half bad, but the PvP requires a lot of balancing still. In any case I might try the game some time in future when it's more stable, and enjoyable, which the beta definitely isn't.
