I know this might be off topic. But I believe I can find some leads within this community. The laptop model is Sony Vaio V505DC1PF, got from CDW a few days ago for only $1299. Considering similar system with Wifi costs $600 more, I thought I got a good deal. But I couldn't take this thing apart to reach the place where the wifi can be installed.

Please kindly help if you could. Thanks a lot!

LOL don't take it apart silly! It will void your warranty, and is unneccessary to boot.

All you need is one of those USB WIFI devices. They are cheap and small. Either that or a PMCIA (sp?) version. They run about $50 AFAIK. Get an 802.11G model.

Everybody has been saying how much nicer the internal card is. Is there no way to put one in? Thanks for the kindly suggestion though.

this is true because most laptops are build with a large interal anntena around the entire base, but not all laptop makers are nice enough to do so. also,if your laptop has this, most likely it would have a trap door under it with a mini-PCI slot for you to stick the card in.

PCMCIA IS internal. I mean, you can't physically open up your computer, pull out a blowtorch, solder on a WIFI chip, then reprogram your BIOS, can you? Or are you an uber-tech?

In any event, PCMCIA is probably what they meant. They are fine. They are the small slots on the side of the laptop that are about the size of a credit card and maybe 1/8" thick.

Probably sony wasn't on the "nice" list. I found their laptop real hard to upgrade. Came with no system CDs whatsoever. I had to make some silly recovery disk. I openned the back door only found the hard drive and some heat dissipation mechanism (I'm not sure though). Even the memory slots are not easily accessible. I know the models with wifi came with a wifi switch. So I guess I'll have to go with external cards.

Thanks a bunch, you guys.

i just did a quick search, your laptop doesn't seem to have any expansion for much of anything aside from ram, which you can get at by merely lifting the keyboard after unmounting it. so like i original asumed, you have no large internal anntenas and no ability to do what you want.

I understand, dude. I had owned a dell and tried both PCMCIA and internal miniPCI. The PCMCIA card always have a bit of tail sticking out and I sometime wonder if I could accidentally warp it. Luckily, that dell came with an easily accessible slot for miniPCI wifi cards.

I guess that's the difference between a dell and a sony. :disgust:

Thanks a zillion. Dude. Now is it possible to reveal your source? I tried google it but no go. Probably I didn't get the right phrase.
