Anyway to turn off TCP/IP LAN network in W2K and use NetBEUI

If I network my W2k system using TCP/IP (which is the default for 2k) it runs really slow on my lan. If I network using NetBEUI it is really snappy and fast. However, It doesn't wan't to let me use both reliably. They fight with each other. Generate errors and finally shuts NetBEUI down. Is there a way to turn off TCP/IP for the LAN like you could do in 98 and such? and only use it for internet?

Or do you have any suggestions for making my TCP/IP networking experience faster? I am running 10/100 Linksys cards using DHCP.

Here is an example. It takes 1 second to search a subdirectory for a file using NetBEUI - It takes 30+ to search for the same name file using TCP/IP. I have photos stored on a network drive by # for work. It is way to long to wait 30+ seconds to see if we have that one number on file.

ktwebb, although that is a fairly good article, it does not give you configuration instructions for win2k. I believe the setting you are looking for is under the WINS tab of TCP/IP "Advanced" window properties. Check the "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. I am not sure if that unbinds TCP/IP for "Client for MS NW" like you used to be able to do in win9x. I am not a 2000 guru (yet) but have used it for over a year and I have never seen a screen like that or like the one where you could specify the default protocol to use.

Good luck!

and if anyone has seen instructions for unbinding TCP/IP for "Client for MS NW" on Win2k or WinXP please let us know!

Doh!. I think I was looking at a few pages at once, one about securing Win2K and this one and blended the two together.

Make NetBEUI Default, and sharing protocol in WinXP.

Right-click on the:

"My Network Places? on the desktop to display the ?Network Properties"

In the Network Properties Window, pull the Advance Menu, and click on advanced settings.

Choose the Adapters, and Bindings tab.

Hi-lite Local Area Connection.

The lower part of the windows shows you the available Shares and Protocols.

NetBEUI has to be in first position in both settings, to be Default Protocol.

You make it first by Hi-lite NetBEUI, and move it up using the Arrow on the right side.

Uncheck the TCP/IP binding form Sharing.

It should look like this:

Advance Settings Win XP.

JackMDS, great information & screenshot.

Even though you specified XP I have verified this to work under win2k!! I had't ever seen a screen like that in win2k nor have I seen any info on the web for changing the default protocol in win2k. I guess MS thought with Tcp/Ip there wasn't a reason for any other protocol.. so they buried this option in a VERY inconvienient obscure place most windows users won't see or find. Have been adjusted to the all the tabs & options on the network "properties" pages this was truely enlightening!

With "forward" thinking like that you'd assume that MS invented TCP/IP!!

LOL!

>>>With "forward" thinking like that you'd assume that MS invented TCP/IP!! <<<<

Actually NetBEUI is Microsoft Original.
