Anyway to stop rust? PICS (crappy, but still pics)

Someone gave a pretty neat old drink shaker with some colored martini glasses. She thinks it's from the forties. (I took these real quick w/logitech quickcam express, pretty crappy but you get the idea)

The bottom says "Forman Brothers, Inc. Brooklyn, NY" in the center and has drink recipes around it. The spout screws on and off. It's pretty neat and I'd like to keep it.

The problem is there are little flecks of what look like rust starting to form at certain places. (camera's not good enough for a close up) I think it is coated with something and that has started to wear off. Is there anything that I could put on it every once in while that would stop that? I know oil would probably work, but I want to keep it out so I don't want it smell like oil.

It must be silver plate. You'll be worrying about tarnish, not rust. Not sure how to stop that short of a coating, which wouldn't be a good idea IMO.

While I'm on the subject I have a Colt dragoon experiencing the same problem. It's so old that it has a ramrod beneath the barrel. I would like to get the rust off and then coat it with something to stop it from getting worse. It has an engraving of a stage coach robbery on it that I don't want to damage.

If that gun is worth anything, you might want to take it to a gun shop and let them oil and clean it. You should store it someplace dry in a container with desiccant.

I've had it since I was about 15. I took it somewhere to have it cleaned when I got it and when I picked it up the guy said that he had to replace three of the screws. I later found out that the original screws are very rare. Crooked SOB.

Where do you buy dessicant?

LOL. When I first saw this I thought you were probably just insulting me in that spelling words with numbers language so I just ignored it. (I think there's a term for it but I don't know what it is off hand) I just pasted it into google and it brought up a bunch of sites. Thanks, I'll check it out.
