Anyway to scale on a 20WMGX2 w/ ATI?

I've heard some people saying that it is not possible to scale lower resolutions on this monitor with an ATI card so that the image won't take up the entire screen. Are there really no programs that can scale for you or anything? Sorry if this is a repost, search didn't bring much up.
 
Give me more details on what you aim to do. I can do pretty much anything with scaling and CCC that I want... (yes, I have a 20wmgx2 🙂)

Centered mode?

Over DVI, that is. I don't think VGA has the feature either on the 20WMGX2's DSP.

Yeah, over DVI there's no problem. I can use 1280x1024 centered mode, for example.
EDIT: Weird, not the case with Cat 6.12b 😕
 
Why have I heard so many times that centered mode does not function on ATI cards? I knew they had a centered timings option, but that just seemed to send a 640x480 signal to the LCD for example, instead of centering 640x480 within 1680x1050 and then sending it over, which NVIDIA's does. Which Cat does it work with? I want to be sure I'm not spreading misinformation as this is always how I've understood it.

I'd be trying to run a program in 1280x1024 so that it would be centered on the screen with bars on all sides, with a 1:1 pixel ratio. Is there anyway to do this without CCC? And if there isn't, how do you do it with CCC?

BTW, is it true that the monitor can do this by itself, but not over the DVI connection? Or am I getting my connections confused?
 
The 20WMGX2 can not do centered mode in DVI or VGA. There are no expansion options. It assumes that you want it stretched to full-screen every time. This is why the video card must send it a FULL signal and then do things within that full signal to get the monitor to do what it wants.

For some reason it seems that no matter what driver I have running and whether or not I've told the CCC/ATT to try any kind of scaling 1152x648 will always perfectly center scale on my 20WMGX2. All I do is switch a games resolution from 1680x1050 to 1152x648 and it automatically puts black borders around every side and centers the image. Weird.

I'm also interested in centering a 1280x1024 image on my 20WMGX2. That or is it possible to apply Vsync to a windowed game? Cause I can do a work-around for scaling limitations by putting the windows task bar to auto-hide, making my desktop a black background, and running the game in a 1280x1024 window but then I don't get vsync.

I've updated the Catalyst drivers each month since getting the NEC in July and have always set CCC as you suggested. Nevertheless, the monitor displays any and all resolutions less than 1680x1050 full screen rather than centered with letterboxing. This is one of my few niggles with the NEC, which I absolutely love.
 
Marlow, keep playing with the centered timings. I have this same monitor and managed to get it to scale using nvidias custom timings settings. Took a bunch of attempts to get the settings right, but it eventually worked. Standard nvidia scaling would not work on my monitor. ATI's CCC display panel timings sounds like it can do the same thing as the custom timings in nvidias driver.

I wish NEC made scaling easier with this panel, its a beast otherwise.

This is kind of side question, but what are people's opinions of the 20WMGX2? Is it a good monitor for the price?

Best LCD ever...no doubt about that. The only thing that may irk you is that it's only 20" (24" is a popular size now). But, that has its advantages, like less input lag and smaller dot pitch. I take image quality over size, as long as the size is at least reasonable (and it is beyond reasonable in this case). Color reproduction is unparalleled, and response time is up there with the fastest. The glossy screen is awesome, and though it will reduce your viewing angles by a tad, this LCD still has the widest viewing angle of any LCD. The panel included is an S-IPS, and non-glossy S-IPS screens have a slight advantage in viewing angle, but glossy S-IPS still beats S-PVA and TN panels in this category. I highly recommend it. I bought it when it was $625, and I'd do it again. It's quite a bit lower in price now.

So the consensus is, ATI cards can center the resolution for some people but not others?

Cheesetogo: what's the model of your card? Perhaps it only functions correctly on X1900 cards? I need to find out.

Hmmm...I'm using Official 6.12's and doing that doesn't enable black bars on the side.
