Going to the UK soon and would love to use an offline maps app for navigation as we traverse the northern English countryside by car.

Since i can't unlock my iPhone 4 to use a local sim card with cheap data (which i would honestly prefer), i'm trying to see if there's a way to put my jailbroken phone into GPS only mode (essentially, Airplane mode + GPS)

Anyone know?

Do you need the SIM inserted to use the GPS? Why not just pop the SIM and use as normal?

When I went to the UK, I rented a Mifi from fonmigo.com. Service and product was awesome. Overall, it was still cheaper than paying the daily wifi rates at hotels.

GPS and maps on the iPhone 4 work great in the UK when accessing data on the Mifi.

Yeah. Since I've had an iPhone, I have travelled internationally twice. Each time, as soon as the plane lifted off of U.S. soil, I pulled the SIM card.

Worked out great for me.

Maybe they should add that an option like 'Airplane Mode' called 'Turn Off SIM Card'?

I'm surprised the phone still boots without sim. Last time I tried my iphone without the sim card (couple years back) it yelled at me for not having a sim and I couldn't do anything with it.

The original iPhone would not function without a SIM card (without jailbreaking).

Since this is the top hit on Google for "iphone GPS only mode", I'd thought I'd share - the best way to do this without needing a paper clip and peeling off your case is to use the SIM PIN function. Turn it on (Settings->Phone-> SIM PIN) and reboot the phone. When it asks to unlock the SIM, just hit cancel. This will have the same effect as removing the SIM

Of course do to this you'll need the SIM PIN. For AT&T the default is 1111. You should be able to get your SIM PIN from your carrier.
