I've had this pc for a little over 2 years and would like to squeeze a little extra juice out of it to tide me over till I can get a new one, i've set jumper to setup and went into the BIOS but the multiplier and FSB areas are blacked out and unselectable, it's one of those deals that automatically detects the proc and sets the multipliers.

Stats are in sig, it's a crappy gateway pc, i've tried about everything I can think of, guess i'm stuck with 500MHz, never again will I purchase a prefab system. :(

You're maxed out unless you want to try some iffy stuff.

The BIOS is locked crap. The only way you can overclock with this board is FSB overclocking with a slocket or connector mod.

Your best chance would be to get a CeleronII 566@850. Put it a coppermine compatible slocket with voltage and FSB adjustments. I think the minimum voltage the regulator on the Jabil can supply is 1.8v, so you're going to be overspec with any coppermine. But you should be OK to run the Celeron at 850 with good cooling.

But there is a good chance with won't work. I haven't tried it. The BIOS might not see coppermines at all.

You could get a little increase if you could find a Slot1 Celeron366@550 or 400@600 and d0 the pin B21 trick to force it to 100FSB. But the problem is there is no way to increase core voltage, so they have to overclock stable with default voltage.

Realistically though, it's time for a mobo upgrade. It is a standard ATX, so you can bolt in a new board. You're gonna have to shell out at least $20 for a good slocket that might not work, or you could go over to the FS/FT forum and find a good coppermine slot1 board for $45 (like an Asus P3V4X).

Good luck

That's what I figured, been eyeing a nice upgrade over on the powerleap site, 1.2GHz celeron tualatin on a slocket with a built in voltage regulator, supposedly works great on 440BX boards. http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm

$170 though, will have to check into all options, thanx for the reply

If you recommend him to buy a new processor w/Slocket, then the Celeron 566@ 850 will not be much better than the Katmai P3 500. There will not be much of gain in performance. Put in a P3 800E or EB FCPGA and with a Slocket. That will boost performance.

1) If he was running a coppermine 500, I'd agree with you, Milk. But I've ran Katmais. Essentially fast P2's. Half speed cache and all. 850MHz of 100FSB Celeron would be noticeably faster than 500MHz of Katmai.

2) Also, since he was still running the Jabil mobo, I suspected price was a primary consideration. Maybe not, since the Powerleap is in the equation. But a Celeron + slocket will cost about $60. A 800E + slocket would cost around $135.

3) 133mhz FSB is not an option. This is a BX, and an OEM BX at that -- I doubt it would be stable there.

4) Since the board can only supply high voltage, an overclock is desireable. Over-volting a chip without increasing it's clock will dramatically reduce it's life. Or will reduce it significantly more than using the extra voltage with extra clock cycles. Sine a 100-133 overclock is at least very unlikely, or more realistically imossible, a 66-100FSB is the only way to overclock this board, thus, I don't really see a P3 as a good option.
