Get a faster connection.

Well in the old days... pre 56k most people if they knew would tweak their modem settings, getting better connection speeds and sometimes make their own drivers. Some modems even had jumpers onboard to change settings also (not just COM setting mind you ;) )

With the advention of the "Winmodem" this control has been all but lost, even most 3Com Hardware modems don't come wioth jumpers, but some enhanced drivers are out there.

Or else get a different ISP... I mean these are forces you cant control..sometimes its the server on UT that is messed up not you, per se.

I would get one if i could, but i cant get broadband here. Does a firewall have any effect on lag? Does an internal modem have less lag than an external?

Edit**Thanks KGB ill check out the drivers, ive been through hundreds of ISP's this is the best so far, there is a limiter at BT's end on connection speed with limits it to 33k so i cant even get the full connection my modem can handle.

Get rid of dial up, a sure way to increase latency... But if you have to, research about "double shotgun".

EDIT: You might also want to disable, shut down any other software that could be eating up your already limited bandwidth. If you don't really have anything important on your computer, just leave it wide open.

LMFAO

Dude, you're hilarious.

Dial-up you'll typically get pings of 250-400 to most servers in the country.

With a decent Cable or DSL connection, you'll typically ping 30-150 to most servers.

Satelite is the exception. With a satelite connection, you are generally going to have at least a 1000 ms latency due to the distance the radio waves have to travel into space. So satelite is basically unusable for online gaming, but you do get high bandwidth.

Low latency is the main reason I pay for cable since I'm a gamer.
