Anyway to "increase" graphics memory?

My desktop decided to die a little while ago, and all I am left with is my laptop. I would like to be able to play some games on it, but the graphics card only has 8MB of RAM and a lot of games require more. Is there any way to use a program or anything to get around this? Like what computers with shared graphics/ system RAM do? I know the performance wouldn't be as great if possible, but I am willing to try.

The laptop is a Gateway Solo 5300
850 P3
256MB RAM
Savage s3 IV graphics chip

Thanks,
Brian

Are you sure it isn't already shared? I'd think that a laptop would tend to do that to save on internal component space, plus an S3 chip isn't exactly a performance demon that would demand its own memory.
Do you have a link on Gateway's site handy for your laptop? I can't find much mention of it, other than how to buy accessories for it. (And for some reason, searching for "5300" returns results for the Gateway 935 series server. Weird.)
