before you could click start and it would give you a whole list and you could navigate to whatever you needed to launch.

now with 7 you are confined within the allocated space and have to click start, then scroll down to find programs you need if it exceeds the space. basically it feels like 2-3 more steps to do what i was able to do in 1 smooth motion before.

i would create subfolders and drag and drop stuff into them to shorten the # of items on the menu. however in 7 it won't let me drag and drop. am i missing something entirely on how to use the new start menu? or is it really less natural now to use?

No you can't. MS wants you to relearn your OS has has taken option of cascading start menu away.

There are third party tools though that sorta work. Try vista start menu pro or CSmenu.

thanks, will dl both and try them :\
i like everything else so far other than that
and having to right click a pinned icon to launch another instance, instead of just double clicking it (firefox etc..)

Right click on the "All programs" button and you can open either the Start menu or All users start menu folders.

You can type these shortcuts into the start menu to get there faster:
shell:start menu
shell:common start menu

Edit:
Yeah, but no drag and drop.

F*CKING MMB, SHFT+LMB, SHFT+WIN+#!
...
Sorry, I just have to type this out more than once a week...

Click the start button and just start typing the name of the program you want in the search box. Much faster than navigating a cascading menu system. Takes some getting used to, but in the end it's a better system in my opinion.

You can actually get it really close. I used to hate the Vista menu and always opted for the XP one, but now that i've gotten used to the new one I have to admit I prefer it more. You can turn off all the extra stuff and have it open just like your old start menu if you want.

how do you do that?

I'm at work which is an XP machine so I can't give you a point by point, but basically you first go into your start menu options menu and turn off most everything. At that point when you click on start, just above it will be something close to your old start menu, which you can then sort as needed. Obviously its not the same as having the xp menu, but its close. Just experiment with tweaking. I'm a minimalist so for me Win7/Vista has always been overkill, but I'm gotten it to a workable point. 😛

Try middle click.

I agree the search box is really handy. I also like the search box in Windows Explorer. Coming from XP, I find these very useful.

Try adding a new toolbar pointing to the start menu folder and see if that is what you are looking for.

For Vista (probably the same as 7)

Right click toolbar -> toolbars -> new toolbar

navigate to:

ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Select Programs folder. Use programs toolbar as start menu.

For the selected user you can add a toolbar linked to:

Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

thanks everyone, i'm starting to get used to it.
pinning commonly used apps/games to the start menu
is helping a lot, i still don't like having a restricted menu size tho.
