Anyway to get around college firewall?

My friend cant use this program, mIRC since he has just moved into his dorm for college. He says that their firewall blocks it. Is there anyway that he can get around this and use the program?

THANKS

No and this topic is not allowed to be discussed here. I too am in a college dorm with a super dooper firewall. Not worth the consequences of even attempting to get around it.

Change the port is uses, but you do risk the posibility of getting in trouble. Not sure why they want to block IRC though, unless your talking about IRC Warez Groups.

Besides spidey's concise and almost accurate response, there is another answer that I like to give people when they ask this question. They can ask the administration. Writing a letter isn't tough. Well, unless you attended U.S. public schools, then you might have trouble. Making the letter convey the information you want, in the language you need to use is much tougher. Make sure the letter is well worded, with polite, concise language written for the technical idiot (and don't use that phrase right there 😉).

The first topic you should explain is the benefits of pirated software, movies, and music to the average college student. Explain how the extra bandwidth being used by relentless porn addicts at 3p.m. is a good thing for the education of the students, despite the fact that none of the students can get to the educational resources the web has to offer, unless of course those sources deal with hair styling.

Next, explain how the, most likely, large ISP bill the college pays will not be affected by this change in policy. Money is, afterall, an important piece of the college experience. Why else would they charge you so much to drink, do drugs, and find as many GOOD friends?

And last, don't forget to mention the security benefits of such a policy change. Mention how Ashcroft wants college students to download the latest Legally Blonde movie. Explain how it makes everyone better consumers, and that may increase the sales in the various stores around campus. Mention Homeland Security, and how Bush doesn't want our freedoms limited by anyone but his administrators, and you may scare the powers that be into opening up the firewall. But focus less on these points and more on the fact that a large amount of the hacked systems out there used in DDoS attacks reside on college networks. I'm not sure how that point helps your cause, but try it anyways.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!

Ok, so this was quite sarcastic, but really, try writing a letter with some good information about how opening the firewall will help the school and you should be all set.

Great post NOC, but you forgot one very important plus:

The FREE publicity your college will get when the RIAA sues one of a sophmore for $2.2 million for owning distributing pirated music!

Yeah, definitely forgot that part. I'm going to blame the help desk guy for coming in and interrupting me with work related questions.

Yes you can bypass it. Simply call your, DSL, cable or satellite ISP and have them install a connection for you. Of course you'll have to pay for it. They can't stop you from hanging a satellite dish on the window by federal law...although the school may have something to say about that.

Yes you can probably get your own internet, I knew of people at my school with satellite for tv. But basically there's no hope with the college connection. It sucks I know, but what really ticked me off about it was how I no longer was able to send people pictures and stuff through MSN or AIM because of the damn firewell. Oddly enough people were able to have FTP servers, but I was unable to send a picture to my mom.

You can set up a shell account and use sftp to move files around. This won't break any rules, is very secure, and possibly free ( i have my own servers, so I never messed with it otherwise).

Upgrade to messenger 6.0 and see if you can send files....it worked for me where as before it wouldn't get past my router.

What does MSN Messenger 6.0 have anything to do with getting on mIRC?

Angrymarshmellow,

I was refering to this post....I though maybe there is a chance that he could get through that router if he upgraded to MSN 6. Slim chance but worth the try.
