in april 2000, i purchased a viewsonic GS790 monitor from pcwonders & it had minor problems & today i got it RMA, but they gave me a optiquest Q95, in the manual it said they can either repair or replace the monitor with another like product, but the visual image on this Q95 19" sucks quaker nuts, the images aren't as clear as the GS series, can i just ask for a full refund of $399?

I dont see why not, because the Optiquest is NOT a like product in your view, and if they bitch, start the BBB process. Never failed for me yet.

That is crap :(

Call them up and demand that they either refund your money or replace the monitor with one of equal or greater quality. Don't accept optiquest in place of a viewsonic, optiquest is the "value" line.

Be prepared to argue with the a little bit. Online buisnesses generally are run on a shoestring budget with little profit.

well i called & asked for a refund, but they said they can't do a credit back, wow, but they said they had a lot of GS790 in stock & didn't know how this mistake happended & said they are going to ship out a GS790 to me & then have me ship back the Q95 & they will pay for shipping both ways, so now i have to use this Q95 for the week until they ship a replacement/refurbished GS790. I really wanted a refund or a new GS790, since the one i brought had problems from the start, & now i just feel like i paid for refurbished stuff, i will never go with viewsonic again, this is the first time i brought from them & i will always remember the saying: "viewsonic on the bottom"

If you paid by credit card, you should be able to get a cash refund. See: What Every Credit Card Holder Should Know, by Howard Strong.

There are a few hardware items that should not be bought online. Monitors are at the top of this list. When you buy one locally, make sure that you see the one that you're buying. None of the, "grab the box and put it in the car" stuff.

Klosters: Partially agree. But, like everything else, you can get such great deals on monitors online. Look at Onvia! Also, I recently ordered a 19in monitor online (get it tomorrow, WOOHOO!) because it was cheaper, especially after all the discounts, and I live in a small town and there is no places to buy monitors except small local stores which would only sell ONE crap brand. For anyone who has the same problem I do, it is great to order them online. But like I said, I do agree, you could get shipped some defective monitor then have to wait and it is somewhat of a hassle to get a RMA and return.

RayEarth: That is stupid of Viewsonic. As soon as I got a different model, especially one that is of lower quality, I would call up and bitch. But thanks for telling us, that is a reason good enough for me to not go with Viewsonic. I never heard any GREAT things about them anyway...

I am suprised. I own a Viewsonic, and know many others who do as well. The only person I know who had a problem was able to get a replacement monitor cross-shipped to him. It was the same model he had.

There isn't really a reason to inspect the monitor you are going to buy unless it is a plat panel display. I've sold hundreds of monitors at work, including a large portion of Viewsonic's, and have never had any come back with problems right away.

hey PCAddict, what viewsonic model do you own? my GS790 had problems from the start, & one thing i like to know is, on your monitor, if you change the desktop color to black, can you see a little white glow that appear along the bottom of the taskbar? & if you go to this website: www.gamefan.com can you look at your scrollbar & see that to the left of it, is there's a faint white glow along the sides? this was one of the things that i thought was a problem on my GS790 but the replacement Optiquest Q95 they gave me has the same thing but not as bring. by the way this refurb Q95 stinks, the image hurts my eyes a lot more then the GS790, also anyone know how old the Q95 series is? i complained that this model was old but the lady said it's pretty new in the optiquest line.

I have a PF790 and it has been 100% trouble free. After seeing mine, two guys I work with each ordered one for their own systems.
One of my friends has a Viewsonic 17" that is a few years old and it has not given him any problems at all. A guy I worked with at my old job had one, and it blew one day. I mentioned him in the last post. They cross-shipped the replacement.

RayEarth -- The lady at Viewsonic was half right. The Q95 is a newer monitor in the Optiquest line, but it is still relatively old and sucky compared to almost everything out there.

I have an E790, the budget 19", and it is great. The image at 1600x1200 is perfectly crisp at a somewhat respectable refresh rate of 76Hz

RayEarth et al:

Warranty-wise, it doesn't matter where you buy a monitor, printer, scanner, and several other types of hardware. Nearly every manufacturer has that clause in their warranty, namely that they have the right to replace the defective unit with a refurbed unit or other similar model.

I had an Epson printer in a system I built for somebody that developed problems 33 days after purchase, just 3 days over the limit for a return to the vendor I purchase it from. So I had to go to Epson for warranty service, and they sent me a year-old refurb to replace what was essentially a brand new printer.

It sucks, but we are at the mercy of the manufacturers. :|

"It sucks, but we are at the mercy of the manufacturers?" why if i had any type of super human powers, i'll make them manufacturers pay for their sins.

PCAddict, the cross shipped model they gave your friend, was it just as good in quality as the one he brought, visually?

about amex & discover, do they handle your problems for you?

I have 25 Viewsonic P815 in the office, one or two started to fail already. But then again, these are heavy and I bet took a beating when delivered.

Buying locally doesn't always gets you the NEWEST model.. ie. I couldn't find TOP end model of VCRs, TV, etc.etc in like the Wiz or circuit city. But if you bought it with CC, your cc company can work for you. Pcwonders... I think I order from them before.. in NJ right ?

forcesho, the 2 monitors that had problems, were they big or minor? pcwonders is in nj & when they shipped me the box, there was a 12" scratch on one side of the box that i could stick me hand through, which made me worried & i opened & viewed the monitor & saw no physical damage, after 2 months i had minor problems, like the monitor going off by itself twice during the start & one main problem is how damn bright these monitors are, even when i try to low the contrast or brigtnest of it, i was wondering if you can see any faint white glow around your taskbar if you set your desktop color to black? many people say they don't see this, but even their cheap optiquest Q95 has this glow, but not as visible in the day time, better to check at night, i should get my replacement GS790 by friday they said, & if that has the same glow, it means i wasted all this time returning my retail monitor for nothing.
