Anyway to fix or "patch" my high ping in Half-Life and other online games?

Back in August, my dad got us Sprint Broadband. We still have it and I love the service (other than Earthlink's Tech Support) and I've only seen one major downside. Online games are hell. My ping is up in the 200's for 5 seconds then skyrockets to 2000+ making it every 5 seconds of gameplay, then 2 seconds of lag.

My friend plays Counter-Strike with his Sprint Broadband connection and he gets pings of 200 and they stay there. He said that he doesn't remember adding any tweaks or any patches so that his ping would be higher, so basically, I'm left in the dust. Are there any tweaks that could improve my ping in games making them atleast playable?

I'm running Windows XP if that helps.

<< get a more reliable connection.. >>

It's either Sprint Broadband or Dial-up. No DSL or Cable around me. Dial-up is seriously better than Sprint Broadband for online gaming.

do in command prompt
tracert and then the server you are using.... then you will see where the slowdown is. Its probably some router your isp has.

Well... make sure your rate in Half-Life is set correctly (should be above 5000 in your case). Otherwise turn on net_graph 3 and see if you're getting packetloss and choke.

Its more than likely line quality or signal degredation, so I'd get sprint to come check their lines.

but it doesnt matter, you just have to check how the packages go from you to the server, somewhere it stoppes and since its the same with all servers then it means that the problem is with your isp, just find out which router, contact the isp tell them the problem, give them a week to fix it or else change your isp.

here's what you could do. Keep ur dialup for online gaming, get some free internet service and just use it for online gaming. On my 56k i used to get about 150 pings, which is better than the 200 you get now.
