I love eating difference kinds of fish... (don't go there!) but everytime I cook it my house reeks like fish for the entire day. I'm sure my roomates are going to kill me in my sleep if I do it again. Any ideas on how to cook it indoors without stinking the house up?

From my experience, a little sesame oil seems to make the smell more tolerable.

Do a full submersion poach. If you poach it in oil, at about 145 degrees, you'll have perfect whitefish.

Isn't poaching in oil called frying?

Actually, when using low heat it's called poelling, when using high heat it's called frying.

agreed. but the idea of poaching in *oil* is just weird in general. seems like it'd simply just soak (nasty)

I'm gonna agree with those who said outdoor cooking ....
But I imagine not everybody has a nice big deck with a nice grill ....

In that case, exhaust fan + window should help substantially (as others have mentioned)

So, I pretty much have nothing to bring here....

I came up with an idea. Wrapped the fish in aluminum foil, with some herbs, oil, garlic, onion. Baked it in that, when I unwrapped it, no house smell :)

It is amazing the number of people that don't know that exhaust fans are useless unless you open a window. Those fans are so weak. They can't create a vacuum in your entire house (yes houses have leaks, but they aren't enough to let the fan do a good job). So, instead, they just sit there spinning and don't push air. Unless, you open a window in your kitchen. Then the fans function quite well.

If the cause of your exhaust fan not being able to move air is that your house is so tight as to create a lower density of air than is outside, you would asphyxiate before morning. :)
