Anyway to convert a telephone into analog in/out?

I want to setup skype for my mother to talk with her sister in HK.
I am browsing Amazon, all these headsets look like ass and cost more than that girl's ass Kobe had. Is there anyway I can convert a normal telephone into a siple

I am thinking about disassembling a telephone head piece and put a mic on one and, and a headphone driver on the other hand, and then connect a cable with 2 1/8" jack.

Is there any simpler method?
 
That would be interesting, using a normal telephone handset on your computer. You just need to identify which wire is for the mic and which is for the speaker. Just a matter of trial and error.
