Anyway to assign Name to ip's on my LAN?

Hello all,

Quick question, and I hope the answer is yes. I've got a plethora of misc PCs doing misc stuff on my network. I use UltraVNC to work with these computers every once in a while. However remembering the IPs is beginning to be a pain.

So to simplify things I was wondering if there was a way to replace the IPs with a name? Like "downloader" or "cruncher" instead of 192.168.x.x

Thanks in advance!

Run an internal DNS server, chances are if your router can be flashed to a 3rd party firmware(DD-WRT) you have all the tools needed right there.

Hmm.. I never try VNC with the host file.

The VNC viewer takes IP, or sub domain name.

My Router can do In Out DNS.

So I have few dynamic IPs through free DNS service, each one redirect to an internal computer with its specific port for vnc.

I can put in the viewer jack.freedns.com:59999

and it goes to computer jack.

The actual traffic does not go through the Internet, but I always use the VNC AES encryption so security is Not a problem even with such concoction.

When configure correctly the VNC Viewer keep the list of connections so there is nothing to remember just pull down the connection Menu and choose the name.

The computers have to be on Static IP, or DHCP reservation.
